Help installing apes 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Need some expert advice on installing apes on my scoot. This may be old hat to some of you, it seems daunting to me and I'd like to get an idea of all the things that I need to think about before I start the project (save riding time). I have 4" risers w/ 1.5" kick back I'd like to keep. I bought a Khrome Werks 1" tube with a 12" rise that is set up for HD controls. I'd like to run electircals internally if I can. Any help is appreciated.

There's quite a bit of information on apes in the Tech Articles. Check it out by clicking on the TECH ARTICLE tab above.

One thing I can tell you that you'll find in the articles and threads on it is to alternate your wire splices every few inches. That way there's not a big bundle of splices when you're trying to snake that bunch of wires through the bar. And make sure your solders are STRONG. Not big, just strong. And cover them well, using either shrink tubing or paint-on electrical tape--you don't want one of the splices contacting the inside of the bar and grounding out.

I ran the electrical through my 1" diameter 12" HD apes and it worked just fine , and I'm an electrical hack...so if I did it, if you just take your time and don't get frustrated, you can easily. OH, and a little lube will help when fishing the wires through.

Oh, and FWIW, I added 12" of length to all the wiring and stuffed the excess inside the headlight bucket, just on the off chance that one day I wanted to go with bigger apes. For once, I planned well...I've got 16" apes waiting to go on now.

Good luck!

So far great advice, doing lots of research both here and on \_/Ape Hangers rEvolution \_/ and am hoping the R* stock controls will work on the HD bars.

boodie:

HD controls on the R* are a pain and increase the size of the project by at least 2X. Some have done it already (better men than I)... R* controls are the easiest way to go. You may find that the new bars don't have a hole on the back to lock the controls from turning. You can simply grind the spot inside the controls smooth and make them tight on the bars.

If you're going to run wiring through the bars, you need to have risers that are separate. Not the one piece R* riser. The older style are two piece.

Also, for what you'll need additional.

1. Extended wiring. Good advice to go extra long. You may want more ape once you're hooked.
2. Brake line. You're effectively adding 5"-6"+. You may need a brake line that's a couple of inches longer.
3. Clutch cable (optional?) You may be able to re-route it a bit so it's not tight.
4. Throttle cable. You may be able to re-route it a bit so it's not tight.

It's a fun project. I've done it twice this year. Once for Beach Bars and once for Apes.

Thanks Roadkill and Rich.

Looking for recommendations on quality cables & brake lines.

I'd like them SS carbon coated but as long as they match ... Barnett seems to be popular and they have what I think I'm looking but can't find a matching brake line in SS CC (yet).

I will second that one...haha...BUT, if you follow the wiring guide that StoneCold has on the REV, it was pretty straight forward. he did his with a 2000, and mine is a 2007, and I think there was only one wire that was off. I plan to do the wiring diagram for mine when I get the module installed in a couple days.

Have a relay ready, you will need one for the starter button if you do HD controls.

The risers..........yeah, I didn't think of this until it was time for them...and I had to modify them greatly. I hacked off 1/4" of each side to fit the HD spacing on the bars. Now, if you are good with metal work, you can make this look OEM. Also, had to drill some holes in the bottom for the internal wiring.

Order the poly bushings now, so you have them. You WILL want them. I need to order them today, as my bars bounce around in the stock rubber bushing.

That is about all I can think of right now...Mine isn't the height setup you are looking for but...here is a pic

oh, and I also had a bitch of a time trying to get the brakes bled...I ended up going to AutoZone and buying the vacu-pump.

As for buying cables, there is a guy on the REV, Tim, that seems to be a great source and price on cables.
