Tour Tanks 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I've recently been fascinated by this idea - strapping an extra 2-10 gallons of fuel to your bike, and have it plumbed into the fuel line.

Well I've found a company that sells kits - of course for quite a bit of dough - Tour Tanks

I was thinking that this could easily be replicated with almost any non-reactive tank that I can strap to my R*... anyone foresee complications?

I know it's extra weight, but being able to go 400 miles without worrying about gas (and I always worry about gas - kinda my own paranoia) would be very cool!

I would be concerned about where to mount the tank and the size (and potential fire hazard ).

Depending on weight and other gear, it could prove to help make the bike top heavy and slow to steer at slow speeds.

I was thinking about getting 2 small ones, maybe 3gal each, and hiding them in some deep saddlebags, as low as I can get em.

I had thought about the weight thing, but what worries me is the slosh, with 2 half-full tanks I don't know whether braking or acceleration would make them a detriment. The tour tank company sells baffles to keep slosh down, but I can get tanks twice their size for half the price... ahh decisions.

Anybody have one of these things? I'd love to hear how they ride!

this story reminds me of the old nascar days back in the mid to late 1970's.some of those more creative drivers would put gasoline in there fire extinguiser and had it attached to there fuel line so if a race was close on fuel, they would have an extra 4-8 miles therefore not needing to pit.that was before all the crazy inspections they have these days.spud

Wow that sounds like a great idea!

I carry a water bottle in my bag with a liter of fuel for extreme backup, but I've had many friends try to drink it!

I know a guy with a 2 gal unit mounted on his 750 Aero, which he rode coast to coast this summer. I think he plumbed it in such a manner so that you could use it as reserve, when it sputters on one tank, turn the valve to open the next tank. He says it saved him a couple times.

Outside the question of where to store 10 gallons of fuel, where would you mount the colostomy bag for the 'old guys' on a straight through 400-500 mile ride??
I guess the boot without a pistol ..
