Ordered new Speedometer 2 Months, 1 Week ago
Hey Fellas,
Well, I went and ordered a new OEM speedometer last night. I am wondering, will the odometer show zero, or is there a computer on the bike that is storing that information, and then just sending that info to the speedometer? Maybe a dumb question, but this is the place to ask. Thanks for all the help,
I just hope this fixes the problem. Thanks again,
CJC

I believe it will start at 0 JM. The meter assy decodes the pulses from the pickup and stores it, which is why you can unhook the cabling and nothing is lost. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is anything else on the scoot that records and saves the mileage. You'll know for sure when you hook it up.

That being the case, if you remember what the old odo showed, you might want to write it down and store it somewhere to keep an accurate account of your miles.

When you go to sell it most states will require an odometer statement and you will need to indicate the odometer was replaced at XX,XXX miles. On the other hand you may be able to get away with it was only driven to church on Sunday's story

Just for shits and grins ... the blue/yellow (speed sensor) and green (fuel level) wires run up into the headlight bucket, through a plug connector and back out to the Speedo.
Try pulling the headlight, popping the connector apart and spraying electric parts cleaner in both connector ends and and use a toothbrush or something to work down into the connectors while it's soggy with cleaner, then pack with dielectric and reconnect and reinstall headlight and ride it and see if that cures the speedo problems.
If it works your only out a restocking fee.

Max

Edit: I am assuming you have already tried the cleaning thing with the connector at the speedo.

Thanks,
I just tried that. I didn't know that there was all that there behind the headlight. Everything checked out ok, but still no gauges, and no odometer display.

I had a speedo go bad in my Dodge pickup, so I ordered one off ebay with less mileage than the one that went bad. When I got it installed the trucks computer reset the odometer back to the trucks original mileage guessing that the mileage was stored in the computer.

Hope your new odometer makes the Roadie feel like its got 00000 miles, and new off the Showroom Floor.

there is a back up fuse going to the cluster according to the wiring diagram. did you check that? you coul try to apply power to the red/blue wire at the connector and see if things light up.
