Hey guys. I just bought some 18" apehangers for my 2005 roadstar. This will be my first handlebar install so I will be asking many questions. My first two questions follow. Thanks for your help in advance.
1) What guage wire do I need to use to extend my electrical wiring?
2) How much wire do I need to add for the 18" bars? The wiring that is on it now is stock.

I can tell you that you will need 12 inch over length cables and brake hose, and about that much extra for the wires also.

I have 16" apes and just had to replace the brake hose. I ordered a 30" brake line (the banjo fittings are about 1 1/2" as well so I have about 33" total length. With that said a 35" brake line should work for you. I got mine on eBay for under $30. Good Luck!

I used 20 gauge wire for mine. If your gonna run them inside the bars you want the smallest ones you can get away w/ and since your only adding less that a foot in lenght I don't think you need much bigger gauge than that.

I ran 18 gauge wire through my bars...no bigger than that is needed for sure. I will say it was much easier with the 1.25" bars than it was with the 1" bars, though... 
Oh, and be sure to stagger your soldering points on the wiring extensions--that way you won't have a big bundle of splices in one spot & make it impossible to fish through the bars.

Thank guys. The bars are inch and a quarter so that should make the job easier. I am going to try to get it done this weekend and will upload some before and after pictures. Luckily I live in the deep South so I can still ride as long as I wear a good thick jacket!!!!

Glad your are joining the prime division of R* Clinic; APE Riders. Take your time with the wiring, I have 18"s on 4" risers and 10" over on the cables works just fine.If you are going to run the wires out the bottom center of the bars to the head lamp, I'd suggest obtaining a decent looking cover for them. I used the braided stainless steel covers off of an ice maker water conecting hose. Lowes has them. I cut the fittings off, boild the hose to make removing the stainless steel cover easy, put a bit of electrical tape around the ends to keep them from un-braiding, slipped them over the wires, stuffed one end in the hole in the bars and the other end in the light bucket. I think it looks great and I'm kinda proud of my enginuity.

Ok, bars are on and bike rides good. Everything works.........except. The bike will not idle (or turn over)in neutral with the kick stand down without holding the clutch handle in. I know it is something to do with the safety feature that won't let you take off with the stand down, but I don't know how to fix it. I know most of you are going to say to bypass it, but I would rather have it working properly. IF it can't be fixed then I will bypass it, but if I can get it to work right I would like to keep it hooked up. I though that maybe the wires that plug into the clutch handle might have gotten crossed when I was lengthening the wires. Anybody have ANY ideas?

It might just be the switch on the kickstand. Should be easy to test with a mulitmeter. If it has anything to do with anything else, you got me. Good luck!
