Ape Hanger Installation 2 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
I noticed that a few people (myself included) are wondering if there are any instructions and processes of installing ape hangers! I ordered the Barons Kong Bars and cables already and they should be here toward the end of the month. I will try my hardest to attempt to make a walkthrough with pictures and all for those who may need it!

Hides:
I sure everyone would appreciate that.
I know that everybody does them differently. Some hide the wiring. Some change the risers. I even did an internal/hidden throttle. So, there's a lot of variations, for sure.
Just make sure you have cables & brake line, extend you wiring & that your risers fit your new bars. Test your switches before you put it all back together. I know it adds a couple hundred $$, but some might want to order another set of switches. That way they can be re-wired off the bike and there's no down time.
Good luck and let us know if you hit any snags.

Hi,
I am doing mine right now and one thing I have found is the holes on the kong bars need to be bigger and on the clutch side ground futher towards the 1 1/4 tube. I ground mine quite a bit towards the tube and I still have a pretty good bend in the wiring harness, and I still can't get my handlebar grip on as far as it should go. I really do not want to pull the harness out a second time, but may have to. I ended up grinding all the holes bigger. Other than that the soldering and shrink tube wasn't any big deal. Do stagger the joints. I used baby powder on the harness and it slide in nicely. So, Clifford is setting me up with cables and I should be on the road soon. Good luck with your bars.
Later,
Mac

you can do ittttt... not much to it, probably most important part is not letting wires strip on anything or get snagged as you run them through the bars, and you should deburr the edges of the holes where the wiring goes into bars and where it comes out
you also may have a hard time bleeding front brake line, but have no fear just keep working at it and it will eventually work...something you should think about though, when i changed my bars i got a bunch of flex in the bushings(its been the hot topic now!) so you may wanna just go ahead and change em out to good n tite ones, you can get them out with some ingenuity 2 sockets one bigger than the bushing one smaller than the bushing and a good strong bolt as a home made press
good luck , you will love the apes

Aye, and it took quite a bit of me eatin' me spinach... Thanks.
If anybody is interested, I just put a set of Chrome Road Star Controls/Switches on Ebay pretty cheap(cheap compared to what Yamaha soaked me for them). Really, really nice shape. When you're doing your apes, it's a nice time to upgrade to chrome, IMHO.
Might as well get rid of them, since going to apes, last set of bars will never be going back on. What's that tell ya...
Somebody might get them for a steal at $125.00-$150.00...

roadymac - are you running the wires on the clutch side out of the switch housing in the original location? If you are, this is probably the reason you can't get the grip on all the way. Try routing the wires inside the switch housing to the dimple in the bars, then route them under the clutch clamp and then into the bars. That's what I did and it works well. fyi, i'm running Kongs. I have a bunch of pics if anyone needs to see anything specific.

Does anyone make an "all inclusive" kit with extended cables, wires and hoses for installing apes? I bought a cheap set of 16" apes on ebay(one inch diameter). But after reading some of these posts Im thinking I need to get 1.5 inch bars. Plus they will look better! Which leads me to my next question. Should I look for an "all inclusive" kit for the bars as well? Such as, apes with upgraded bushings and bar clamps?
Thanks for any advise you can give.
