16" ape hangers on 2000 roadstar?? 2 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|

Can I do internal wiring with a 1" bar? I think it might be way to tight and weak if I drill a hole near the grip?
Also if so where can I get a decent handle bar that's 1 1/4 that's fairly cheap? I know that might not happen but I am not into buying Carlini bars. I used to have a set and yes they are the best looking and quality you can buy. I don't have that kind of cash now a these days.
Thanks
Dan

Barons customs sells 16" kong bar 1 1/4" for $200.I bought a used set for 100.i wired mine internally and the left side was really tight(11 wires) the right side was easy(only had 6 or 7)I have heard that you can do it w/ a 1" bar but i would not do it.Besides the 1 1/4" bars look awesome

I wired my 12" bars intenally, and they were 1". Just remember to stagger your splices and you won't have aproblem. I didn't and its tight.

Definitely a lot of wires on the left side, and I can't imagine trying to snake them all through a 1" bar. Yes it can be done, but if you still haven't purchased your bars I'd opt for the 1-1/4" just to save yourself the headache.
Not sure what you consider "cheap", but I just got a set of 10" mini apes from Wild 1 and am very happy with the quality. Very nice bends (no dimples), nice large machined slots for internal wiring, and the chrome finish puts my old Baron Nostalgia bars to shame.
Only downside to the Wild 1 bars is that you have to buy their offset risers to fit them as all their bars have a 3.5" center width for Harleys.

my opinion, i think you should mount the bars without internally wiring to make sure the bars are the right size, my wires were long enough on my 99 so im guessin the wires on your 2000 should reach... then if you like it you should wire internally
just my two cents, i did apes on my friends bike and he ended up not liking them, big big waste of time wiring internally

There is no way my wires are long enought with 16" apes... I tried this afternoon and the cables were a couple inches short...
Also I think 10" cables over stock are too long? I measured and I think the throttle cables will be 8" and the clutch it looks like I can get away with 6"...
I perfer the cables as short as needed to run the bike, I personaly dont like the extra cables sticking out every where I want to run them along the bars all the way down. Maybe with some clamps..

The stock's will work if you don't run them through the front of the triple tree. Run them behind it and all you will need is a new brake line.

im with shamrock on this one...im using stock throttle, wiring (external), 2 over clutch, and a pretty long brake line...
the 2 over clutch i had already put on prior and it works...i will admit though i will be going to a longer clutch cable soon because it is too tight...8 or 10 over would put clutch cable at its stock routing and through the guides on the frame
and with the stock wiring, there is a lot of slack in the wiring in the headlight, try opening up headlight and you will see it all in there
