would it really be this easy? if so im a dummy.... 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
so the lonney axles are for 3/4" bearings and he charges $115 for each axle now the front is its own thing, but is there any reason someone couldn't just buy a stupid grade 8 bolt from a hardware store for like $15 or less and use that for a rear axle???

I would advise against it. An axle is machined part. (straight & true) A bolt is a forging. not so straight & true. Bearing seating could be another problem

especially as the rear axle goes thru 4 bearings and they all have to be in-line..

+1 BUT...I see no reason that you couldn't use a grade 5 or 8 shoulder bolt if you can find one the right length to the shoulder and diameter. They are machined and more percise, some are even ground. But as large of one as you would need they definitely wouldn't be the cost of your average bolt either. You might talk to the Fastenal people and give them your specs on shoulder length and diameter and thread size. Interesting idea now that I think of it

The stock rear axle, and the front axle too, is hollow. I forget how but somehow that makes them stronger. Maybe someone here remembers and can explain. The rear axle also has a shoulder that prevents the washer, and nut, from tightening past a certain point.

Plenty of guys have tried this and sometimes it worked but think about it. You really want to do something that is a "maybe" on one of the two wheels you have? Not me.

However I will ride a motorcycle with a drum rear brake, rigid frame and no front brake so I'm not sure I'd listen to me.

yea. i just figured a solid grade 8 bolt would be alot stronger than the stock hollow bolt. and then a ton cheaper than the looney axle as well.

Long time since my engineering classes but as I recall the reason it is stronger is the stress doesn't pass directly from on side to the other thru the diameter (shortest distance being a straight line) it goes on the outside so it would be 1/2 Pi approx 1.57 times the diameter. In effect it is the same as a 60% thicker bar and it is straight force trying to travel on a rounded surface which also means the force is at a tangent to the bar for most of the time. It also travels on both sides of the circle to the other side cutting the force in half. Thats one reason arched doorways are so strong.
