Another fairing vibration thread, only different 1 Year ago
Been looking through for a solution to this problem but the word vibration means too many different things here.

The Reckless is doing what it's supposed to. I'm worried, however, by the amount of vibration I'm getting at low speeds. Maybe shaking violently is a better description. Between 20 - 30 mph, or the perfect State Park back road speed, the thing shakes so hard it wants to jump off the bike. This is the same vibration that caused my Kuryakyn lay down license plate mount to snap and require welding in the past.

That was steel and it snapped after a few years, 30k miles or so. How is a fibreglass fairing supposed to hold up for 100k more miles? I can only imagine what that's doing to the mounting bolts, speaker mounts, radio mounts, and internal electronics.

I'm thinking that if Yami could use weighted bar end grips to reduce vibe, maybe the same would work here. Anyone tried something similar? I'm thinking of glassing or epoxying some sort of weights into the fairing wings and that might cut down on the worst of it. I can steady the shaking with a very light grip on the upper edge of the fairing, so that gives me some hope that this can be solved.

This may be a dumb question, but are your tires balanced? That's about the only thing I can think of that would cause that much shaking at low speed. Just throwing it out there.

if everything is tight i would start looking for the source of the vibration, granted these bikes vibrate but yours sounds excessive, mort

PhatRJ...Sorry, I don't have solution for you, but I know exactly what you mean. I recently made a set of lower deflectors and now at a certain RPM I notice my windshield shaking up to a 1/4" at the edges. With the lowers off it doesn't do this. Must be some kind of resonance thing. Maybe the addition of lowers would help your situation.

That's the least dumbest question ever, because my tires are currently jacked. I don't think out of balance, because they run good at highway speeds, but they are cupped and blocky thanks to going waaay too long before replacing my front springs and oil and rear shock, which were all toast.

BUT, that being said, the above issue with the license plate snapping happened on good tires, so who knows. I thought it was normal to have this sweet spot (or un-sweet spot?) at low speeds that everything set to jiggling. Been that way since new.

Thought maybe it was the same RPM thing that let you crank up the throttle in neutral at a light to juuuust the right amount and make your passenger squeal and turn red. Is that too much info?

EDIT: Maybe on second thought it really is just tires. Gonna feel pretty stupid if that's the case, because I already knew those were bad. Just didn't think they were the only source of the jiggle.

I have had car tires that weren't perfectly balanced but you only noticed at certain speeds. A little faster or slower and you didn't notice. I don't know about the license plate mount. I think I saw in another post about the rear fender vibrating but I don't remember where I saw that.

Maybe its those mounts, Mine doesn't vibrate at all. Do you have the two haves tightened up real well?
I discarded the factory mounting stuffs that hold it together and replaced them with nut plates, its way more sold

I don't know if it is just the fairing shaking or the whole front end but since your tires are toast anyway you need to replace them. Also check your wheel bearings while you have the wheels off. At low speeds you really shouldn't get much shaking out of the fairing (IMO). Good luck to you in getting this fixed.

What mounts are you talking about Stevie? Mine doesn't shake at all at low speeds, and the only time I notice anything harsh is when I'm winding out a gear and the higher revs make it dance a little...

I have the same problem with my Dead Center Fairing, but mine is rpm based not speed based. At about 3000 rpm (give or take a few rpm) my fairing shakes/vibrates enough to cause the weather cover for my stereo to close and rattle. The Klock Werks windshield also vibrates and chatters. I've been fighting this ever since I installed the fairing, but I don't think it is the fairing or the fairing mounts that are causing the problem. I think it is the Yamaha windshield mounts that are vibrating at certain rpm and transferring that vibration to the fairing. The reason I think it’s the Yammy mounts causing the problem is I fabricated some internal braces inside the fairing similar to the mounts Harley uses with their batwing fairing and it didn't change a thing. In fact it may be a little worse. If you look closely at the bottom of the windshield mount brackets when you fairing is shaking you'll see the bottom part of the bracket shaking. Also, if you grab the top of your fairing when the bike isn't running and move it back and forth I bet you see the bottom of the windshield mount flexing. I'm going to try to modify some of the Yamaha quick detach windshield mount to accept my fairing. Those brackets seem to be much more ridged than the standard mounts and I'm hoping that cures my problem.
