Re:Baffle-ing V&H's Long Shots... 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago

My sense of adventure was expended on the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum yesterday. The 165 is the only Mikuni jet I have, and I'll have 6 weeks to pick up a couple more! My Carb bowl screws are in good shape. I have good around the corner tools for them! I'm gonna see what the 165 does, and go from there. Gonna work on the GL1800 rear shock conversion as well. Put a rebuildable Showa on the back of the SV, and it worked great. Gonna try this one too.

Weeeeellll...
I checked around a little and called the good folks at V&H's, and they don't make a "Quiet baffle" for the 2 1/4OD Long Shots. They sent me along to "Big City Thunder", and I ordered a pair of their "QQ Thunder Monster baffles".
Talked to a nice lady named Gail, who sold me an expensive tee shirt so I could advertise for "Big City", and threw the baffles in for free .......eeerrr sumthin like that.
I'll try them by themselves, and then I may fab something up with the current baffles and them combined(cut&paste ), to get them further into the pipe, to get some extra low end sound.
Should have them by Wednesday sometime, I'll update the results after the install.

These are the Vance and Hines brand quiet baffles I used when I had longshots on my Roadie.
http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=21869&Show=Reviews
They tamed the volume down although the loud bark was still there if you grab a big hand full of throttle. Also gave me a boost in low end power. Took about five minutes to remove the stock V&H baffles and install the replacements.
As you know I wanted the most quiet exhaust I could find and went back to the stock exhaust system.
These particular ones I believe are too small for the V&H Longshots. Their customer service department told me the OD of the baffle is 1.81"; my baffles are 2.09" OD.

Yep, those are the ones I called about originally(21869), the folks at CC passed me along to V&H, and V&H told me to get in touch with Big City. Its all good....well, the price was steeper then the Quiet Baffles, "butt hay", that'll happen. Besides when I spent that much, I got a shirt

Not to hijack this thread - but I've been emailing back & forth with a tech rep from V&H who used to have a 1600 Roadie with V&H Long-shots. My original question was about changing to a Pro Pipe, which he suggested I don't for a couple of reasons. What he suggested was that I do what he did, which was cut 10" out of the middle of the stock baffles, weld them back together, and enjoy the boost in mid-range and top end as well as a slightly richer sound. Anyone here ever try that?

I haven't, but I think it's worth a try. You should do it and let us know how it turns out.

I purchased the V&H brand quiet baffles from phatperformanceparts.com and installed them in the longshots I had on the bike at the time.
The inside vs outside diameter was just right. One metric allen screw removed on each pipe, a coat hanger with a small 90 degree angle bent at one end to remove the stock baffles and five minutes later the job was done.
The trick about wrapping the the insulation with thin wire as illustrated in the video is correct otherwise it will bunch up when you slide the quiet baffles in. (tight fit)
will be interesting to hear the difference in the other brand baffles
Its all good as long as the end user is happy with the decibel level

I was getting some conflicting stories as to what would and wouldn't work. I read some post on a different forum, where they suggested that V&H was concerned about liability from bluing on the pipes, and didn't recommend it. When I asked the guy at V&H, he basically said they didn't make one for the 2 1/4 outside diameter pipes. I had sent an e-mail to V&H's myself yesterday morning, and the reply I got was a number for the stock replacement baffle(21877). They still sold the 21869, but nobody wanted to actually get off their butts, and find the part and measure it for me.
I may well have been trapped in that part of the world where nobody knew, and didn't care to find out. I hate to order stuff and send it back, so I went to plan B. I figure if Cruiser Customizing and V&H have all the business they need, and wanted to spread some around, who am I to argue.
The QQ's don't have the glass wrap, but they should take some of the edge off, and give back some low end torque. With them to start with, I can always make some alterations with part of the stock baffle and the QQ, and maybe another piece I can wrap, to tone things down some more. I'll try just the QQ's to start, but I think I'm going to end up pushing them as far forward as I can in the pipe with something else behind them before I'm done.
Thanks for the pointer on the wire hook. I wasn't sure how I was going to get a hold of it, but the wire trick had crossed my mind. I figured I'd wait until I had the baffles before I pulled the old ones.
