...........Second - just thinking out loud here as I don't know but wondering just how effective the unit can be without a fan? I can see how you are creating a bit more surface area but the unit would only appear to be dissipatting heat when your moving or cruising... seems like you would really need the ability to dissipate heat when sitting or moving slowly in bumber to bumper type traffic...

What say you RSC???

I going to cheat and just copy and paste: This is my take on oil coolers: I believe they do help with engine life. I have one installed on both bikes. Oil is the life of a motor and by keeping engine oil cooler it keeps it from breaking down faster. Oil coolers dissipate the most heat when moving but do help while stopped by convection and radiation transfer. Even in stopped or slow moving traffic oil is being pumped through the cooler helping to dissipate heat.

You're selling me on it, tibadoe.

Bottom line, does it improve the temperature level to a point where it is noticeable or can't you tell if it helps? Nice write up btw

The breakin period on the rebuild is over. Gonna see if an oil change will help. Also got an idea for the oil filter for a heatsihk.

Have you had time to test it out? Bottom line, does it have a noticeable affect on improving temperature? I would think that a unit that adds a little oil to the system, say, at least 1/2 quart would help the oil cool also. That is how Victory oil cools their motors. I think they have almost 6 and 3/4 quarts of oil capacity.

I have been on a few rides since the install and it deffinately sheds some heat. Exactly how much I can't say since I didn't have a guage to show the temps of the oil before install. Afer install the temps would stabilize around the 15 to 20 mile mark and the oil temps stay at around 185* to 190*.

The DBI cooler disapated heat really well since it is basicly a large heat sink with cooling fins. I temporarily removed it due to a slight oil drip at both bottom unit fittings. I installed the JAGG in its place until I get the DBI fittings to co-operate with me. Even though both coolers work well I like the DBI best because of the temp guage and chrome housing.

I didn't see the need to add extra oil because when I installed during the oil change and added 4 qts it regestered as full. They coolers themselves and lines don't hold that much oil. So between the oil cooler, oil cooler filter, and a good running R* motor it can only help the life of the motor.

I just added an oil cooler to my 2000 MM and rode today in 90+* heat and I must say it made a huge difference. The Royal Purple might be part of the solution but I can't say for sure because I did the oil change using Royal Purple and added the diverter and cooler at the same time. But I am very happy with the result

Thanks much for the response. I just did a Mobile1 oil change and a self made oil filter heat sink mod. It definitely helped. Neutral came back and The bike shifted a lot easier. Now I will be able to tell once I do the cooler mod, how much it helps. Once again, thanks for the response.

Have the Jagg on mine. If you want to know how much heat it dissiapates, after a ride in 100 degree heat reach down and grab it with your bare hands! LOL

Re:Oil Cooler Install 9 Months, 1 Week ago
I guess that would be one way lol. I am going to get the Barons filter mount/diverter for $85.00 and make my own cooler now that the bike is running cooler. I can tell a big difference in temp just by how much easier it shifts and now the engine is much quieter. I had to run the course with the breakin oil since the rebuild and the new PR pistons and other parts. I don't know if the home made oil filter heatsink helps but it sure looks awesome and it protects the filter. OBTW it passes "your" test. DO NOT TOUCH. It does get hot. And for $3.85 it is easy on the pocket
