Oil loss at filter change... 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Curious...You guys that do the filter change only..in between oil changes...like I do, Do you worry about puttin' a little oil back in due to the small loss when you swap filters? If so, how much?

Depends on how long the filter is

Just kinda eyeball it and add that much back.

I change the filter every time I change the oil. I use Amsoil 20/50 and change every 5000-6000 miles. It cheap insurance in this hot Texas heat.

Questcap,

Maybe some folks run synthetics and prefer to let the miles run on the oil but not the filter. I do both every 4,000-5,000 miles and run full synthetic. I'm of the opinion it's cheap insurance, too.

Synthetic oils have extended change durations that can be prolonged when changing out filters. A standard oil in an automobile is good for 5000 miles. Synth can go 10000, some people like to change their filters at 5k.

Now the harshness of the environment in a bike engine, 5000 might be a good theoretical max for synth and some may want to change their filters at 2500.

Re:Oil loss at filter change... 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
it all stems from the 40's thru 60's automotive philosophy, born out of the existing technology back then.

rings were very basic and a lot of un-burned fuel, along w/ carbon deposits would pass down the cylinder wall and enter the crank case. hence u would get gas contamination in the oil, and break it down . that's why it was so critical to change the oil EVERY 3000 miles.

now days, the ring material / technology, the coatings on the cylinder, and even the micro honing of the cyl wall, eliminate a huge % of carbon and fuel that squeaks into the case oil.

synthetic will last tons longer than organic. so now we are primarily concerned more with particulate contamination, than we are with break down.

a filter change between oil changes?... absolutely the cheapest insurance i've ever seen.

NOW, has anyone figured out how to do it with out draining the case??
