The AIS is located at the front of your bike behind the rectifier. The pop comes from having less baffles in your muffler, and the extra air being pumped into the exhaust chamber by the AIS to clean up the emissions (this is also assuming the point where the muffler meets the header is tight so there are no air leaks there). It's just annoying. The tech section describes how to remove the AIS.
