Carb trouble...Please Help 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|
Hello, I have a 2003 Roadstar that a friend of mine has me taking care of while he is out of town. I noticed when I get up to about 65MPH the bike starts choking out as if its barely getting enough gas. At first I thought it was the cheap air filter my friend had on the bike to replace the stock one. I thought maybe it wasn't getting enough air. So, I purchased the stock filter and replaced it. But now it seems as though the bike putters at lower speeds. I opened up the carb this morning to check the jets and they all appeared to be clean. (the bike did sit for some time) I noticed I'm getting terrible gas mileage and so I'm wondering what I can do to fix all this. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Well, it was sitting for some time after he initially bought it. He actually crashed it on the way home from the dealer. So after that was fixed it sat and was ran only when uncle sam was done with him and he came home. So, since 2003 it only has about 2k miles on it and hasn't been run on a regular basis. Now, that I have the bike I take it to work during the week.

First ting I would try is draining the tand and the carb bowl and put fresh gas in it and a water removal additive like heat in it. See how that works and go from there.

If it didn't ( and maybe if it did ) have any fuel stabilizer in it the gas is most likely bad and you probably have some varnish and / or gunk in the carb. Take the carb off and clean it up as good as you can with some carb cleaner. Fresh gas. New plugs. Put some Seafoam, Ringfree, or MMO in the gas, and take her out and run the beegeebers out of it. Might not hurt to change the oil too. Does the bike have any mods? Pipes, airkit, jetted?

Well, I had already gone through 3 tanks of gas from riding it already. I had previously posted that I had opened the carb today to inspect it and there is no gunk inside. So, what else can this be???

You can't always see the 'gunk'.
Take it apart and thoroughly clean it up. It doesn't take much to foul a jet or a passage as they are very small.

Seafoam is good for what it's intended but you need to get physical with your carb .... hands on so to speak.
