Jack stands? 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Anybody ever put your bike up on "blocks" using four jack stands on the frame tubing? I've done the teeter-totter route with he bike balancing on a clunk of railroad tie and it works, but I was thinking I'd like to try the jack stands on the four "corners" of the frame for more stability since I'm taking off wheels, rear fender, pipes...changing both oils, replacing front pulley, changing the starter to a Warrior model... With all that going on and no wheels, I'd hate to accidentally bump the bike and have it pivoting on only one point.

Anyone done this successfully...or care to warn me off from doing it?

TIA,

RK

Just for alittle peice of mind the motorcycle jacks that sell at walmart and you can find them in Northern Tool work great, you should be able to find one in the $60-$70 range. If you are taking the wheels off I would make sure it was tied down good also. I've never had a problem with my jack! I have droped a bike while trying to do what you are doing! Just a thought, better to get the right tools.

RoadstarB--

Thanks...I've got a motorcycle jack...wouldn't do without it! It's just that the bike is going to be without wheels for several days, and I just don't know if I trust the jack for an extended period, even with the safety bar/teeth engaged. Thought jack stands might be a nice, stable alternative to use the jack and set 'er down on top of them.

Once you have it jacked up are you going to have room to get the 4 stands in there? If you do then I don't see why it wouldn't work.

The bases of the stands will be almost touching each other, but yeah, they should fit according to my measurements. My measurements? uh oh...

Yeah but your going to have the jack under there to get it up in the air to begin with. Is there room for the jack and the stands at the same time

This reminds me of folks saying they change their oil on a MC jack, I'd really like to know exactly where they put the oil pan to catch the oil.

Lot of work for nothing.

Get two 2x8's long enough to span the frame. Name them together.

Raise the bike with the jack forward of the balance point, the rear of the bike should want to stay down. Lift the rear of the bike and slip the 2x8's edgewise under the rear part of the frame. You can put the cutoffs of the 2x8 flat on top if you want more height. Lower the bike so that it rests on the 2x8.

Solid as long as you don't try to push the bike around.
