Road Star Shopping, input please 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Greetings from the northwest corner, Bellingham, WA. Just joined today. I've narrowed it down to a Road Star. Have tried on many misfits (Kawasaki, Triumph, Vstar, HD, Honda) this year and am now searching in earnest for the right Roadie. I have my eye on an 03' silver edition. There are two within 125 miles of me, both have less than 4k miles. Both in budget so this weekend might be it. There are also later model bikes in same price range. Would it be wise to buy an 04 or newer? Are there better/worse years to watch out for? The FI 08' is not in my budget. Thanks, I would appreciate any constructive input or links to same. Thanks, Randy

buy used! there are so many bikes out there that have low mileage and are half the price or less than a new bike. prerty much the main difference b/t years is the color choice. the engine size changed from 1600 to 1700cc in '05 (I think it was 05).

The 1600's are under a tranny recall. The 1700's can (rare) have problems with the valves getting carboned up. There's only a 68 cc difference between the 2 so it comes down to buy what you like.

1700 came on the R* in 04 (on the Warrior in 2003)

If you buy used it may already have some of the goody's on it that you want and not cost as much. It still comes down to getting what you like and is comfortable for YOU.

I have a brother that lives in Bellingham rides a 1100 Vstar.

If you buy used you don't pay for the add ons (at least not near as much) I got mine with 2000 miles on it with lots of extras. There are lots of great deals on this great bike.

Thanks all for your input. I'm finding that $7500 or so is the going rate for a clean, low mileage sample in this part of the world. Nice to know that there is no significant disadvantage to the earlier model, as I really like the liquid silver 03. Moondog, pm me with your brother's contact info and I'll see if he'd like to join me on a shake down ride to Graham's at Mt. Baker for lunch. Cheers all, I'll let you know what I end up with. Randy
