Belt tension 4 Months, 1 Week ago
Couldn't find anything in the tech and forum area (but I know someone else will so thanks in advance) about the amount of tension the drive belt should have. Seems to me there was a measurement of about 1/2" of "wiggle" play. Starting to get a chirp when backing up so I'm thinking it's time for an adjustment.

I have always used the 1/4 turn test for mine and go from there.. if you can twist the belt in the middle between the pullys then you should be really close...

If you grab the belt midway between the pully's and can bend it about 45 degrees then it's ok.

Service manual says 1/2 inch deflection with 10 lbs of pressure. You can get close with 1/4 twist thing.

That does not mean the belt is loose ... it means the wheel is probably cocked a bit and rides up when moving the bike backwards.

You need to tighten one side a little (probably 1/16 or 1/8 of a turn).

For those who care (most probably don't , but...) , the tool Harley Davidson sells to check the belts on their bikes is the same , only designed a little different. Bought one a couple years ago , and used it maybe twice , but I've got it. It was something like 25 bucks from HD. My local Yamaha shop couldn't even find a P/N for what I was asking for , and when they Finally asked their head tech , who provided them with a P/N for it , it was something like 45 bucks. So , If you're like me , and like having the right tool for the right job , save yourself a 20 and pick one up at your local Harley dealer.

got an idea, take a small rod about 4 inches long. find a piece of tubing big enough for the rod to fit in freely. cap or pinch off one end of the rod and get a spring about 3 inches long, put the spring in the tube, and put the rod in on top of the spring..now push the rod against a bathroom scale, compressing the spring until you hit 10lbs. mark the rod where it lines up with the edge of the tube with a piece of tape..now whenever you push the rod into the tube until the tape lines up, you will be exerting 10lbs..... what do ya think...
