How much noise is too much? 4 Months, 1 Week ago
So everything that i have read and experienced myself with our scoots are that indeed the engines like to make a few noises and i know that its just our bike talking to us and letting us know what it does and does not like. I just did the first oil change on my bike and put in amsoil 20-50. That really shut it up but what im wondering is at what point is it too much noise that we should look into it?

I am not having any problems but just would like to get all your opinions for in the future.

I suppose there is no real answer to that question. You would probably have to have several bike there to ride and compare. I would say you should listen to your bike and learn what noises it does make. If you have a drastic change or something completely new after having riden it for a few thousand miles, that would signal a potential problem.

You get used to all the noises it makes. When an unusal noise pops up you hear it right away.

I am used to most of the noises that it makes as this is my second R*. Like i said i just was wondering at what point would someone consider actually opening the engine when the noise is there be it for valve adjustment or a overhaul.

I guess all I can say is I would go into the motor if it was an internal noise that wasn't there before and I had exhausted any other possibilities.

I've actually found the top of the Rodie engine to be surprisingly quiet...
most of the "noise" we hear comes from the body of the motor... the cam, lifters and pushrods...

sometime when you have a few miniutes, take a solid bar of metal, (I use a 12" socket extension...), clean it up first and put the socket end right in your ear and place the ratchet end on different parts of the motor when it running...
If you do it right, you'll actually hear the meshing of gears, the turning of cams and the mating of parts deep wothing the motor...
Plus it's a lot cheaper than a mechanics stethoscope...

i;ve been wondering/concerned about the sounds i hear also. i hear it only when the engine is hot;3rd/4th gear under light loao/roll off throttle.its a light ticking/ metalic sound. roll the throttle back on & its gone . my mechanic, whom i trust[if your reading this dave] says everythings OK .ive started using lucas fuel treatment & and its helped. QUESTIONS 1; is this just normal backlash im hearing 2] is amsoil oil better than yamaha oil?

As Musky said, when you get used to listening to your engine if the tune changes you will know it. When everything is running fine, whatever noise it makes should not change - when it does that is not a good sign. Any oil that meets mfg specs will do. Synthetic is better than dino. Research the forum here and you will find all kinds of opinions here.

SInce we are in the subject of noises,,,I am a little concerned about the top of my 1600 engine. I recently did a oil change and used 30w " I know I should be 20/50 and I am gonna change this weekend" but in the meantime I can really hear my lifters/valves more than usual and the bike started a wierd vibration after the oil change. I know it sounds akward for all that to happen but wouldnt the 30w quiet it down a bit more being a thicker oil? Or is there a possibility that the thicker oil is not reaching where it should? My bike has always ran super other than running a bit rich lately which made me wonder about cylinder wall wear? any input here..I'm listening..

http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,187/func,view/id,102796/catid,49/limit,10/limitstart,0/ After reading this whole topic "Engine Chatter" I think I am in the same boat as Donnas. I also feel a bit of vibration, hopefully nuttin.

Why would you use that oil? . How would 30 be "thicker" than 50 weight? And who knows if this oil has anywhere near the properties needed in our bikes. Are you still riding the bike?
