Tombstone taillight wiring 4 Months, 1 Week ago
I'm installing a J&P tombstone taillight with attached turn signals onto a new rear fender and have a question about the wiring. Apologies in advance if these are dumb questions, but I'm electronically challenged.

In the top left picture is the wiring setup on the new tombstone taillight and turn signals. Each turn signal has one red wire and one black ground wire. What's left is one red wire and one black ground wire for the taillight.

In the bottom picture are the ends of those two leftover wires, which are just bare wire. They don't have those plug thingys (pardon my techno lingo.) Do I need to do some splicing or something?

Another thing is that on the stock taillight from my '99 was a blue wire, a yellow wire and two black ground wires. I assume one, either the blue or the yellow, was for a running light and the other for a brake light. Why would the new tombstone taillight just have the one red wire and one black ground wire? Is that one wire going to function as a running light and a brake light?

Thanks for any help. I still have to sand the clearcoat and then buff and polish it up all nice and pretty, but I'd love to get this thing done and installed before I run out of riding weather up here.

yes yer yellow is brake and blue running...

now...maybe yer new light does not have a ground wire but is grounded thru the mounting screws......

one wire cannot operate both the running (tail) and brake ..so I am thinking the the black and the red are live wires..which is brake and which is running ??? check to make sure you do have a double filiament 1157 bulb....and the two wires are going into the bottom of the bulb socket

best way is to put power to each and see..which is the brightest and that would splice to your yellow stock wire and the other would be splice to the stock blue...

if I were to guess I say the red is the brake and the black is the tail light...but follow the black make sure it doesnt go to ground.. the ground will then be thru the bulb socket to the light housing assumming it is a metal housing..

Wow! You're quick and you're right. The red wire is the brighter by far, so that's the brake light. Worked like a charm. If you weren't a guy, I'd.......well, let's just leave it at "thank you very much."
