Fattest rear tire without mods 1 Month, 1 Week ago
I run Metzeler ME880 tires on my 2001 Roadstar and plan to purchase another ME880 for the rear soon. My question to all of you gurus is what is the fattest rear tire size I can run safely with stock configuration (Star's recommendations not withstanding)? I read the post on grinding the subframe and am not completely opposed to some material removal as long as structural integrity is maintained. Any advice is greatly appreciated in advance. By the way, a Milwaukee pig pilot informed me of the fact that my Roadstar "Ain't nuthin more than a Japanese Fat Boy", to which I replied, "Yeh, I call it Sumo" (known to be rather obese Japanese wreslers of course...get it? Japanese Fat boy? I knew you did.

Thanks, I want fatter, but I like my bike so much as it is I don't want to mess up a good thing. I would like to find a front road light kit that would fit nicely with my Memphis Shades "Fats" windshield and not look like a J.C. Whitney failure.

You can use a 160 with no [roblems, just put it on. you can go to 180 with minor work but anything wider gets serious cou can use a 160 with no [roblems, just put it on. you can go to 180 with minor work but anything wider gets serious consideration.

The Avon 180 fits great with no modifications.

Let's clarify .....

On a stock rim .... 160 is max recommended. Anything wider and you're outside the rim's recommended range. The sidewall also gets pulled in so the tire does not look any fatter. The ground contact patch is also not much bigger. Grinding not required.

On an aftermarket rim .... the size will determine what you need to do.

What is the width of a stock tire? They dont look very wide and I would also like to go with a fatter one, but my budget is limited so for now i will have to use the stock rim.

Stock is 150.

160 looks wider .... anything wider doesn't look any wider 'cause the sidewall gets pulled in.

Rims are 18".

Front are stock widths. Rear is 5.5" rim with a 180 tire.
