Way to tight 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago

|

I noticed three months ago my transfer case oil was leaking from the fill hole. I went to the dealer and asked for a new gasket for the oil stop screw. They were nice enough to put it on and tighten the screw.
I deciced to change both oils engine and transfer before I leave to sturgis. I went jto open the transfer fill hole and I could not open it. I wound up chewing the screw slot. I bent the washer I usually use and I had a mexican coin that I have used and bent that to. Now I have to get a new screw for the fill hole and I hope I can get it changed before I leave and get the new screw. Why do people tighten things down to the point of over tightening?

Since it is already buggered you may try putting some ice to it to get the metal to contract and use a small chisel or screwdriver and tap it loose .....good luck with it ....you can always take it back to the guy that did it ....Coug

I don't want to chew it up any more then if I get it loose I won't be abe to tighten it
The place that tightened it is closed Nonday and I am leaving on Tues morning.
So I will bring it to another place and see if they can loosen it.
and get a new screw. If they do not have it I will call Rapid City have them order one and the time I get there it should be there.
If not that I will ride there and back and worry about it later. I believe I have only 9,000 miles since last transfer oil change You can go 16,000 and I use synthtic so I can maybe go 18,0000
Thanks
Ron

Overtightening oil drain plugs and filters is very common...
you wouldnt believe the number of stripped oil drain plugs..I replace.... in my auto business...
the heat of the engine tightens up the plugs even more...and filters...
and ya think the garage mechanics would know better...

The best part about it is the guys always snug it up so much, then the next time its in the shop they're cursing the person who tightened it before them.. oh, karma maybe?

Well I brought the bike to another dealer bought a new crank case plug $20 and change they charged me $10 to get the other loose(Nice Guys) It turns out that the other guy put locktite on the plug.
Go figure no wonder I bent two washers.

I shouldn't be amazed at the level of stupidity at dealerships anymore. But everytime I think they've reached max dumbness they come up with something new.

There are usually one or two good mechanics on staff at the dealer and the rest just do the stoop labor like, unfortunately, changing oil. What is really galling, though, is when companies like Yamaha tell you to,"let the pros do it". The following are real incidents to illustrate the work of "the pros": (1)Leaving mounting bolts loose on a friends exhaust system so that only the header pipe bolts were holding (2)Leaving the axle pinch bolt out of a Vulcan Classic after installing a tire (3) Mounting a tire on a friend's Nomad in the reverse direction of rotation (4) Leaving fender bolts loose on a new Roadstar Midnight Silverado so that the right bag support was only held by the bolt that attaches to the passenger footpeg bracket (5)failing to tighten the rear tank bolt after assembly of a bike
