I am sure as well. It just frustrates me beyond words that when I followed the instructions for the jet kit, it left me running so rich that it looked like my bike was a diesel.

+1 I went through the same crap when I bought a Dynojet kit for my '04 1700. Also ended up with a lite case of SVS before I got the correct jets in. The needle worked fine after installing the right size Mikuni main (172.5) and pilot (40)jets.

Which one am I looking for?


On a 1700 with a Barons adjustable needle a Mikuni 172.5 main jet and Mikuni #40 pilot jet is what you want to use. Needle groove/clip and PMS same as above

If some guys get in there club fisted and are not gentle while working with and around the float. The adjustment for the float is a little tang attached to the float needle valve that you bend to change the float level. If you put pressure on the float while working inside the carb you can inadvertently bend that tang and throw things out of adjustment.

Mikuni offers a small round main jet and a large round main jet. Which one do I order?

On a stock carb either will work but most use the large round.

My bike came with a K&N big air kit. I contacted K&N and they tell me....

"Thank you for contacting K&N Engineering. We understand you're looking for more information regarding the installation of the RK-3925-1. The RK-3925-1 installation instructions do specify that you MUST use a carburetor recalibration kit. Upon installing this product, you must re-jet your carburetor."

I did look up the installation instructions on the K&N web site and it does say that a recalibration kit is required at the top of the installation sheet but they don't say what one consists of or how to install it.

I guess my question is.....Replacing pipes requires re-jetting to a certain size jet with a stock air cleaner. If the BAK is installed, do I need to re jet again to an even bigger size jet?

Depends on what’s in there now. Follow Dave’s advice.
Most here don’t recommend a jetting change just for pipes, but when you start opening up the intake, via a BAK, or Poormans BAK with the K&N stock replacement, it becomes necessary.
