Poor performance 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi,
I own a 2006 Roadstar with a Champion Sideccars Trike Kit. This is my second Roadie (The first was a '04 Midnight) I know the theory and I'm no stranger to rejetting these bikes, but now I'm starting to feel a bit brain dead. I live in The Valley of the Sun, AKA Maricopa County Arizona. It's summer and hotter than the hinges of hell. I've been playing with the jetting for a while now, and on a flat road with full excelleration it'll run all the way up to 5500 no problem (Dyna 3000) I usually run through the first three gears then level off (don't want the tickets. I'm running a Hypercharger Pro R and Roadhouse slip-ons. All seemed good 'till Sunday when my son and I went for a ride to Roosevelt Dam, then to Highway 87 and back to Mesa. Highway 87 has a number of steep grades and my trike had a lot of difficulty pulling them. Under full accelleration I could'nt get any further up the rpm scale than 3500. The wind was gusting and I have a Switchblade Two-Up windshield, and granted with all of the sub-structure and automotive steel wire wheels this thing is a pig, but it does have a ton of torque. My current carb settings are 37.5 primary 190 Mikuni main, not sure on the PMS, I have a Barons thumb screw and adjusted it on the road. Any ideas?

Change in elevation ......

The dam is around 2000' elevation ... the valley is at 1200' .... that's probably your problem.

I assume all is well again when you got back home.

BTW .... You're running quite rich as it is so as you go up in elevation it gets richer and hills are where you're going to feel it as you're giving it a lot of throttle.

The valley is about 1100FT, Payson is about 5000Ft, not sure about Roosevelt. I live in Pinal county (no not where we keep all of the prisoners, its pronounced pee-nail, ok, that makes it worse, huh ) which is the neighboring county of Maricopa. When it snows in hell, the devil comes here to warm up. Summer temps up to 123F. Average 107 highs this time of year. I call it the Surface of the Sun as Valley of the Sun makes it sound like a pleasant place.

kratzenator, that turn to go towards Roosevelt (about 20 miles south of Payson) is higher than the valley. How's it running now?

Been thinking of that but yesterday I was wiped from the ride. A trike in mountains and gusting winds is a handfull. Got any Idea how far to back off on main jet size? Kuryakyn and Factory Pro (where the jet kit came from) told me to start with a 185. Of course I had to bump it to 190, you know, just in case it worked. Guess it didn't. Also I'm running a 131 tooth pulley to offset some of the added weight of the trike kit.

I live on the edge of Maricopa, a couple blocks from AJ. And you're right.

Well for 1000' with HC and slipons, and Mikuni jets ....

170 main
35 pilot (stock)
Needle on 5th clip
PMS about 2.5 to 3 turns out

Do the WOT to test the main. I suspect that the 170 will be too rich so have a 167.5 and 165 in hand. I would guess the 165 will do the trick.

Your answer kinda' threw me. My stock jet was a 182.5 and I know that Hypercharger sucks a lot of air. My Midnight was jetted at 210 (Mikuni) and at the time I was running around the Central Valley of California. I could pull 90mph in 3rd running up some of those Mountain passes (under acceleration, didn't stay in 3rd).

p.s. How do I get the pic of my trike to appear under the message?

Sig Pic info here

Surprises most folks.

In our experience as soon as you put on aftermarket pipes and air cleaner you need to go leaner ... much leaner.

You are correct ... the stock 1700 main is 182.5 but you'll find you can drop down quite a bit from that.
