can someone help me fix this....I took off the heat sheilds from the V&H longshots and found this:

That's why you have heat shields.

The rear pipe is going to run hotter at that point as it's shorter but I'd guess you may be a bit rich.

that pic scared me. I got out of bed to make sure my pipes weren't blue. Mine are ok right now.

I guess I'm concerned the top pipe is so burnt up and the bottom is almost perfect. The pipes only have a 1k or 2k miles or so...

If you could take a look at the bottom pipe the same distance from the head you should see similar (but probably not as 'bad' discoloration.

Bluing is caused by excessive temps as a result of a too lean (I doubt it) or too rich (probably) carb.

Okay, I tried one baffle on front pipe with the other pipe baffle free & vicea-versa...not good! Without baffles, the bike just loses a ton of the tourque.
So I cut off 6" of each baffle...PERFECT!
Now the AIS removal kit is in and I plan on installing (err, removing) tonight. From what I've read it could take a while. I can't start unitl about 9PM, so I may need a lot of coffee....that's taking into concideration that I don't even know what the AIS looks like!
I've downloaded the installation guidelines from 3 different sources, but I'm looking for any words of encouragement here::: please fire away.

My pipes are blue. Not on the outside, but on the inside, closest to the engine. They are VERY blue. I take it that this is a bad thing? Is my exhaust doomed?

Rider4Christ:

No backfire after you cut the 6 inches? I've also ordered the AIS removal kit and I'm not looking forward to removing it.

How are the pipes? You know how it affected me the other night - I've been seeing blue pipes in my dreams (nightmares) every since. As a matter of fact, I haven't riden my bike since then becuase you scared me so bad!!!!

Re:V&H Longshots debaffeled?...make me louder! 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
since I cut the baffles 6" less (which leaves about 8" of baffle I'm guessing), the sound is perfect. No "jake brake" on hard decel and very minimal (if any) backfire.
I think once I remove the AIS (good Lord willing), the bike will be how I want it.

However, I'm wanting to put on an air kit to let the engine breath....Thinking about K&N RK-3905 http://www.knfilters.com/yamaha_custom.htm. Anyone got any opinions on it?
