Re:Tank slapper handlebar shimmy wobble 3 Months ago
Mine just started it tonight. It has never done it before. I checked the tire pressure, everything was good there. I put it on the lift and centered the wheel. It stayed right there. It didnt fall to one side or the other. I hit a couple of nasty holes riding home last night. I am wondering if I knocked a wheel weight off. I can;t find on the wheel where it shows marks like one if missing.

turned out it was the steering head bearings. when I hit a huge hole wednesday night I knocked them loose. Dealer torqued everything back down, rides great again.

I had the front end shimmy on me when heading downhill at about 40ish. I took my hands off the grips and shimmy-shimmy. I was very surprised and it scared me .
I've ridden alot a while back and this has never happened to me.
I will check out the front wheel for cupping/pressure and the steering bearings and adjust them ASAP.

Got a shimmy all the time until I replaced the front tire. I always seem to cup my tires, this bike the VFR, CBR, Hurricane etc. etc. etc. The Cupping causes the front end to want to run a little side to side so I just let it, never have fought it. Sort of disconcerting in a corner, but as long as I stay loose and relaxed it never turns out bad.

Also, if you are getting a true tank slapper acceleration will take care of it. Trying to fight a tank slapper with your arms is a losing battle.

When I first got my R* it didn't shimmy the least little bit, I put a set of home made lowers on it. Then I noticed a little shimmy, last weekend the wife and I went for a ride and I noticed it was worse. I came home and the next morning I went and checked it out, the neck bearings were a little looser than I liked. It kinda slammed to the side, I tightened the bearings alot better now. I think the lowers bring out some of the shimmy in my R*, like I said I never noticed it until I put them on it, but I will live with it for the benifit of the reduced air under my chin. And being able to hear the awesome sound of my V&H short shots.

well, mine started doing it again this evening. Not as bad as last time, but its there. Dealer tightened down the steering head bearings a week ago. If they are loose again, there is something wrong.

My bike has never done it before, but it has started to vibrate on decel. I'm pretty sure it's getting worse.

What nut do you tighten? Is it the big chrome nut that stares you right in the face when you're on your bike (just below the riser)? Are there more than one nut I need to tighten. I checked the wheel while on a jack and it didn't exaclty "slam" to one side or the other, but it was indeed pretty loose. If I wanted to repack or replace my bearings, how would I go about that? Thanks in advance.

You need to go here and check out the service manual. Looks to be a several (or more) hour job.
