Battery not charging 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have determined that my battery is not charging..now where do I start troubleshooting the problem? The only extra item added to the bike that could be drawing more amps is a set of driving lights. How simple of a fix is this? Any help is appreciated! (2000 R*)
Thanks - -JB

If it started after you put the lights on then start looking at what you did when you put them on. Also the 1600 charging system is pretty weak and the lights might be too much draw.

Musky -
Thanks for the quick response..With your help,I believe you just helped me solve the problem. With the bike OFF and the tester hooked to the battery,it's reading 12.5V...with the bike running and the driving lights ON the tester is still at 12.5...when I turn the driving lights off,the volts jump up to 14V.I bought the bike with these lights already on..so I don't know how he hooked these up. Are there any lower voltage bulbs that I need to use for the driving lights?
Thanks - JB

Check to see if the lights wired directly (D/C) to source voltage (battery). If it is you may need to install a relay. A relay will use a small amount of volatage to operate a heavy amount, thus conserving battery power.

If it does have a relay you may need to upgrade your stator or remove the lights.

Sorry about the link, I just clicked on it and it just takes you to the homepage. I'd type it all here but it's easier to google it. Type, automotive relays what are they and why do you need them. in the seach field.

If you want to cover it so you don't have to worry get a new stator and Reg/Rec. The newer (started in 05) are much stronger. Direct swap.

But check and see if maybe the PO put 55 watt lights in there. That would hurt your charging for sure.

are they 35w or 55w lamps? On your yr bike 55w lamps are too much. 35w, or you will need to up-grade both the stator and rec/reg to an "05" and up model yr.

I just removed the lights and found that they are only 30w lights..how could these lights cause such a drain on the battery?
