Soba check service manual chapter 3 page 70. It details the correct way to get to TDC. This is a bit more removal but well worth it. No mistakes here dead accurate. I have tried other methods on my Concours and nothing beats using the proper timing marks. You do not need to use a wrench to turn the engine you can still rotate rear tire for that just helps to have another set of eyes.
Also when you do adjust be ready for a lesson in patients. Sometimes you have to adjust and check many times because of movement when you retighten the lock nuts. Once you have done this once it will be easy next time.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't see the parts involved well enough to do it. I bailed for now, but I'll be back!

Hey Earl,

Can you look through this group of photos and see if any would have helped you? Considering what you just went through I would like to make some changes to that article. This photo album is shots from the class Thor (Dave Meyer) taught on how to adjust your valves at GDSW a few years ago:

Thanks, Gram,

yeah, I saw those photos - several times - but I guess what I lacked was how to match the photos to the instructions. Given I had to get the bike back together, I figured I'd come back to it later. It deserves time to work through it rather than rush through it and pay a price.
