I just provided names of the three most commonly ones ... you can use anything similar ... there's a tone of the out there by different companies. Of course, some may work better than others.

The cleaner is only a temporary fix. You need to jet the carb leaner.

Backfire on decel can be due to various things. Once you get the carb 'properly' jetted it may disappear.... or not.

Yeah, I'm not backfiring on decel. Just choking out at speed when getting into it.

Re:Sputtering and backfiring. 3 Months ago
Hello Everyone on the forum...I am Sam or Samiam! I own a 1999 Yamaha Road Star with about 65K miles on it. For the most part it has been a dream for me to own, I am the original owner. Very little problems, you know the usual maintenance tires etc. I installed Vance & Hines Long Shots several years ago and a Dyno-jet Rev master. I had an air kit installed by Thunder Mfg. here in Phoenix AZ. and had the carb rejetted by them on the dyno. HP went from 58 to 64 and Torque from 94 to 99.7. All was well until a recent trip to the high country. Once in Flagstaff it started sputtering, backfiring a lot, and seemed to be running only on one cylinder. It would occasionally take hold and run on both like it should, then do the same thing all over again. I made it back home and took it to the local dealership. They kept it for several days, flushed the gas tank, "rebuitlt" the carb, changed the oil, filter and plugs then gave it back to me about $400.00 later. I didn't get 2 blocks from the shop when it started doing the same stuff all over again. Raw gas was spurting out of the carb both before and after the fix. The backfiring never stopped and the sputtering was like riding a bucking bronco. I took it right back and they gave me the usual cock and bull story about being test driven by the technician and he said everything was OK! B.S. I talked to the manager and he finally took it on a test ride and was back immediately to tell me that I had to leave it with them once again. After several more days they called to say it was ready and I could come pick it up. No extra charge, but the "technician" discovered that my carb was jetted "wrong"...it did not have the original jet in it and that was causing my problem...DUH!!! Well he replaced it with the original and said that would fix the problem. I haven't ridden a lot in the past six months, took two or three trips up North for breakfast, about 300 miles round trip and it was working just fine. Not as much power as I used to have but no sputtering or backfire. Just last week-end I rode up to Globe about 130 mile trip and on the way up, the whole thing started again. So, I know this looks like the first chapter to my book, however, I am at a loss as to what to do. Can anyone out there help me out? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And I promise never to write such a long question again. Yeah Right!

Thanks Samiam

You need to tell us what your jetting is. What main, pilot, how the needle is set up, how many turns on the PMS. Does this seem to happen right after you fill the tank? Have you checked the fuel filter? Did they or you check the coils? You could try some Seafoam, Ringfree, or MMO in the gas and see if that clears it up.

Re:Sputtering and backfiring. 3 Months ago
Thanks for the Welcome...No I don't think it is the gasoline, I did change the fuel filter and use some STP and some other gas treatment to get the water out of the gas. The pipes, rev limiter and rejet were done in 2002 and I don't remember what they ended up using for the jets. I know that the original jetting is what I started out with whatever that is and that's what I think the dealership put back in when fixing it. I do however, suspect the coils and plug wires since they are original and that may be the next thing I try. I was checking out one of the technical articles here and may do what it suggests. I can't remember the name of the coils but I'm sure you're familiar with the article.
