Got a Tiny Tach 3 Years, 9 Months ago
I'd been stewing for a long time about getting some kind of tach. I really just wanted to check my idle rpm's every so often. Settled on the Tiny Tach 2C for $39. It runs on its own 5 (+-) year Lithium Ion battery.

I decided to keep it near the tool kit under the seat, so I ran the red pickup wire through the frame along side the battery and wrapped it around the #1 plug wire about 4 turns, attached the negative lug to the neg battery post, then used double sticky-sided tape to attach the little tach to the cross piece that sits just behind the tool kit. It works like a charm.

I found my idle was around 710 rpms! Bumped it up to over 900 where it belongs.

Looks just like what I need. Did not want to spend a bunch on a tach and mainly wanted it so I could check idle and so on.

I know what you mean about wanting to know where your idle is. I was curious about the idle, REV limiter and general RPMs while shifting. I got off the wallet and purchased the Pro-1 that mounts in-lieu of the handlebar clamp. Its angled and well lit. I am very happy with this one. It is angled just right to fit on handle bars with windshields. As for looks, its not too tacky... sorry, I couldnt resist.

I was real close to getting the Pro-1, Scotto, but the ol' budget just said no.

I know what you mean about the budget. Pipes are next on the list. Good location and knowing your RPMs will serve you well. It has me!
