Dyna 3000 settings 5 Years, 7 Months ago
I installed a Dyna 3000 on my bike yesterday. I just wanted to make sure that I got the settings right. It came out of the box with all the switches set in the on position. I wanted to set them to a 5000 RPM limit and the advance to 34A. so I just fliped the switches according to the chart on the unit.IE SW 1 in the off,SW 2-on etc. is that the right way to program the unit.

I must have set it up properly because I just got back from a long ride and everything worked perfectly. I also removed my AIS and what a difference that made, no more back-fire.

Scott good to hear you made it back OK
I am also looking at getting a Dyna 3000 for my bike as I have already modified the pipes, air and re-jetted the Carb, and am constantly frustrated by hitting the rev limiter just as the bike feels like it is still climbing in power.

who does the bike feel in so far as more power and more performance

It's all in your head.

For a stock internal bike, the R* max Torque decreases around 3000 rpm and the max HP is flat around 4000 rpm.

All sound and no fury.

Edit .... Thanks pday .... I had the HP and Torque reversed (too fast with the fingers).

So Doc... that means that unless one is going to install high compression pistons, different carburetion, and change the cams/valve timing the Dyna 3000's ability to increase the rev limit is moot?

There isn't anything there at the higher revs so why spend the dinero to get there. Money better spent on maximizing what you've got, air filter-jetting-exhaust-suspension than on what you ain't got. Thanks I was really wanting the ignition module but now that I know it wouldn't help I can spend that money better elsewhere.

Doc,

If he's got a rejetted carburetor and open exhaust seems like he'd be getting close to a Speedstar 2 Configuration in which case he would be getting increased horsepower beyond the stock rev limit. See chart for the Speedstar 2 configuration: http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitem500/5/18/91/2330/all/1/0/7/in2/itemdetail.aspx

Interestingly, the speedstar 2 configuration includes the competition ignition module. For this configuration it seems the main benefit comes from the increased rev limits. Beyond stage 2, though, when you're getting into HC pistons and hotter cams, the ability to tailor your timing curve to your engine becomes more important. I'm not sure if the speedstar module allows you to select different timing curves. If not, this might be an advantage for the Dyna 3000.

That's my opinion.

However, it does allow you to stay in the lower gear for a longer period of time so it may add to you driving experience.

I noted that when racing the stock bike you need to shift before the rev limiter. When I have taken it to the rev limiter I've lost time but that is probably a function of the bike cutting out.

You'd have to do a side by side road comparision of the difference with and without the increase in the rev limit to see if the dyno HP/Torque info translates into a difference in light to light times.

BTW .... I do not race on the street. I only race in closed circuits. Like those TV adds.

I think it did make a difference on my bike I'm set up with mostly a stock bike 2000 mm model.I do have Vance and hines 2 into 1 pro pipes buts that's it,besides removing the AIS. I think it runs smoother than it did before the Dyna also it seems to starts easier than it did before.

I partially agree but with the SpeedStar config look how the curve flattens out at the stock 1600 rev limit. In reality how much power do you really have once you're in this rev range.

I agree the Dyna is advantageous if you're doing internals. It allows you to play with timing to get rid of the dreaded pings.
