Ok, point by point...
"car tyres are square in section and as a result, when you lean it over, the bike `risesī on the corner of the tyre on the inside of the bike and effectively you have the the track of the wheels out of line."
My 800lb top heavy Venture I bought a few weeks ago has a Metzler ME880 rear tire on it with 11,000 miles on it. It looks like they were all put on it riding straight up because the profile is flatter than any car tire I've ever seen. Well, since they stopped making L60-15's. To me, it handles almost as well as my Roadie with new Avons. Youtube has videos of CT's on bikes while riding and carving curves. Here is one doing figure eights's in a parking lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAHlbSzwjsg
and as the video shows, the bike raises on the corner of the tyre, and besides, this is in a car park. itīs out on the road where it matters.
messing around in a car park means dick, hell, i can scrub the chicken strips off a set of tyres on a sportsbike in a car park doing silly slow speeds, but it doesnīt mean i could do it on the road.
chuck that bike around a long fast sweeper at 70mph+, and iīd lay odds that it gets interesting, and i aint a gambler. out of line tracking has a habit of doing that
i ainīt, and never will be convinced that itīs a good idea.

When you finally throw that worn out tire, how square is it?

That's the flattest m/c tire I have ever seen yet it still has tread left. The edges aren't worn at all and it sounds like a bearing grinding when I lean it because the transition from flat to the corner edges of the tire have about a 1/8 in step broken by the tread grooves. LOL
I'm fighting with myself right now whether I'm going back with a ME880 to match the front that the PO gave me(which the Venture forum hates because of so many delaminating or loosing chunks of tread), a new set of Venoms like I have on the Roadie... or a car tire.

That's my point.
It you look at RSCstar1602's sig pic you can see that the center is significantly worn whereas the sides of the tire have a lot of tread left. Mines is also similar ... quite flat in the middle with some tread on the sides (less than an inch).
Most of ride in a staight line for miles and never see the lean angles that you want when on a sport bike ... so why pay for that additional tread if you're not going to use it.
This discussion reminds me of the "is MC oil better than car oil" debate. Unless you've actually run them on the R*, everyone is speculating.
So .... who's first.

If I had known what I know now... I would have done it on the Roadie when I bought it a few months ago.
But there a few Roadies over at the Darkside forum running 195/60/16 tires. Fits with no problem and only 1/4 in shorter. Throws the speedo off .5 mph at 70 which is already 8 mph off. LOL

I live in florida and my MC tire looks as flat as a CT any way. I've been considering it.
Does anyone have a video of how much stress a car tire actually gets while turning on the front?
I'd bet it gets more "sidewall stress" on the car than it ever would on the bike.

A couple of Weeks ago I rode to Virgina with some Buddy's. One of the guys has a Suzuki M109 with a 260 on the rear I believe. Anyhow spend most of the time behind him ( didn't have much choice ) I noticed that when he leaned into a turn his tire only made contact on about 1/4 of his tire width. Looked very similar to the video's of Car Tires on bikes I've seen. I think with all things considered theres probably not much difference in handling unless you're riding a sport bike and really get deep in to turns. Just my observation mind you being I have stock sized Metzler's on my bike but at this time I won't discount the possibility of a Car Tire for longer wear and I have to believe the stresses associated with carrying 4000.lbs compared to 800 out way stresses associated with cornering. I believe the right Car Tire may very well be a better alternative.
