Usually when I twist my key to the open position, I can hear a pop sort of like opening a trunk of a car. Just took mine off a minute ago. If you don't hear the pop, then try holdind the front of the seat down while twisting the key to the open position.

I have to turn my key to on before I turn it back to pop the seat. You're not pushing down on the key are you?

Take a break... Take the key out and turn the bars a little bit. That has nothing to do with the key but it will make you feel better
Then put the key back in, turn it to the left and listen for the POP, if it doesn't happen then try again with a little pressure on the front of your seat.
Some times you just have to stop and walk away for a minute for the bad Juju to go away.

I'll try that, Musky. I'm not pushing down on the key. Another problem I have, is that even though I have a brand new battery, it's not holding a charge. I've been riding the bike daily, so I haven't been keeping the battery connected to the battery charger/keeper. Today, I stopped off and turned the bike off, and then when I turned the key to start the bike again, I got NOTHING. No gauges, no lights, no needle movement, no clock. Nothing.
I called my wife who came with my charger and a voltage adapter/plug-in for the van's cigarette lighter, and within a few minutes, I had enough charge to fire up the bike.
Cripes...

Test the battery, I can't tell you how many times I have gotten a bad battery right out of the box, and not cheap ones either.
Sorry about your luck today, I had my bike on a AAA tow truck last week so I feel your pain.
Might want to check your charging system too. Probably just a bad connection or battery.

The 1600 do not take kindly to all the electrics you have. The charging system is anemic and has difficult keeping up if you're running as many lights as you have.

After I got home, I pulled the battery keeper pigtail out and put the voltmeter on it. 13.4, I think.... Then, with it running, 14.9? So I think I'm okay as far as that goes. It seems to be charging fine. If I could get the @##$ seat off, then I could check my connections and stuff. Grrrrr....
Yeesh... Now that it's cooler outside, (and in the garage), maybe I'll go down and give it another try.

They charging is not the problem ... you have to much draw from all the lights and the stator can't keep up.
Some folks switch the rectifier and stator out from a 1700s.
