1st Service 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
My 2007 Roadstar 1700 is due up for its first service. The dealership says they look over the whole bike and check everything including valve clearance.

Is a first service really necassary? Will an oil change and tranny oil change suffice?

#1 The dealer is lying, you'd be lucky if they changed the oil properly.

#2 Do it yourself, change the oil and check for loose bolts.

#3 Send me beer for the money I just saved you.

Just read the manuals and tech section here and do it yourself. It's not rocket science it's just a motor If you can change the oil and spark plugs in your car then you are good. If not......maybe the deal...stealer is the way to go.

I did it myself. Changed the oil, xfer case oil, checked bolts, etc. Saved the receipts in case there's a question down the line. It depends on how you feel about getting into things and doing it yourself SychoSly. I got great satisfaction doing it, and even managed to spill some oil on the garage floor as proof I did it myself.

What are they charging?

By the way, the tranny and the engine use the same oil. There is transfer case oil too. Doesn't hurt to change it also I suppose. Both are easy to do and explained well in the service manual and this site. I've never had my valves checked. If it ain't broke (or making odd noises).... Well there are odd noises with this bike, but that's why you get loud pipes. 43K miles and going strong.

I take my bike to the dealer for service until the warrenty is up, that way they can't deny any claims. I also have the oil changed every 3-4 thousand miles with synthetic.

I let them do it ONCE, Not too keen on the Oil they use, rather have Lucas or Amsoil myself (Depending on expected temp) They also tightened the belt, they said, or was that checked? $238 oil change. I do same thing and check more for close to a %50. Besides, I do a lot of in depth cleaning when I do the work, they don't. Plus, no one knows the bike like the rider. You may find other cures as you do the work. But if you are rich, dealer.

And they don't even look at the valves until like 16K miles or something like that. So that was their 1st lie.

Stick to using the dealer, when your stuck.

MS 1700 with 10K + in 5 months.

I vote for the above, I just changed my oil and filter, the transfer case oil and aired the tires tonight in about two hours, I was messing around too...
Save the money and do it yourself and send RodieFF the beer, why not.
