Long story short, I hit a pedestrian and laid the bike down. The shop that I took it to is saying that the steering stop on the frame is damaged. This means, according to them, replacing the frame. It is an '01, so I guess once you add the other items, the repair doesn't make monetary sense. My question is, should I try to buy the bike back from the insurance company and fix it myself? One of the techs told me that it would be easy to fix the stop for a good welder, and I know one of those, they just can't do that type of repair. Any thoughts, oh gurus of the Road Star Clinic?
What really sucks is that I just got it out of the shop for the tranny recall that wasn't done by the former owner (I have only had it a month and a half).

If the damage is not that bad.......and the price is right.......the steering stop is an easy repair. I've bought a few bikes where a piece of the stop was broken , repaired it , but always told the buyer that it was done.
Shops will total a bike with that little damage because of the cost to swap everything into a new frame. Might not hurt to find out how a bike that new would be considered (like would it be a salvage title bike at that point) , never mattered to me because of the value of the beaters I was working on , but your resale value could take a substantial hit on a bike that new/nice. Just a thought. BB

Rotten luck on the accident. I hope all are OK. All would depend on what you can get it back for...That's where I'd start.

They will probably put a salvage title on it. You could buy it back for cheap. See these on ebay for around $2K. Perhaps while its still at the shop you should have your welder friend check it out. |

Thats your call as to how much they want for it. Lot of different things to consider in that one as far as which would be better.
Hope you and the other poor person you splattered are alright.

Luckily, I am just sore with a touch of rash on my elbow. The ped is 17 and he should be okay. The police report said possible broken bones, but I am not going to try to contact him for fear of a lawsuit. Luckily for me, he admitted fault and was cited. Sad part is, it wouldn't be worth the hassle of trying to sue him.
I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this. One idea I had was putting it up on ebay, either parts or whole, I just don't want the hassle of having parts all over the garage. Fixing it myself wouldn't be a problem, but it would be easier to just get another and get back on the road (pun intended). If the cost to get it from insurance is low enough, I may be able to pull off a new bike and keep this one. I'll keep you folks updated.

The bike in my sig was totaled for the same reason. If you con find someone to repair the steering stop your golden. It took me about three weeks to find someone willing to touch it.
Their is a BIG difference in value once a bike has been on a salvage title. Forever after the title will have some modification that indicates it was once totaled. So if possibly, try to work a deal where the insurance company DOES NOT tell the state they totaled it. You might not have a choice on this if the Insurance company is paying you anything for it.
If you sell it let me know, or announce on the forum. I am looking for a project bike.
