You'll feel some resistance when you turn the key to the left from "Off" to "Open", that's engaging the latch, turn it anyway, it will (should) pop the seat. You push the key to lock the steering; of course that only works when the handle bars are turned to the left all the way. Now, with just a bit of pressure on the front of the seat, it comes off every time. I went through it about six times, just to be sure. I also tightened up the battery post bolts, cleaned up as much of the oil as I could reach, polished up all the chrome, went over various scratches with touch-up paint, and waxed all the chrome and paint, and went over the saddle and bags with leather protectant.
