Bike Starting 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
On my 2007 1700 Road Star I always need to pull the choke when I go to start. When the choke is pulled the bike starts right up. If I do not pull the choke the bike cranks then catches for a second or two tops and then dies.

Is this normal behavior?

Should I be able to start a cold bike that has been sitting over night without the choke?

Thank you very much.

No sir. You will always need the choke to start the cold beast.

yes always need the choke, I even ride the first mile or so with the choke on a bit, then she's all set.

Same here... start with choke open for some thirty seconds or so and then half for a few tenths of a mile in warm weather then push it in. In cold weather... just more of the same.

I can tell when I have forgotten to push it back in because she will begin to backfire a little on decel after she's warmed up.

This goes back all the way to the beginning of the old Road Star, I have a 2000 and when cold I have to use full choke to get er running. I let her sit for a second before going to half choke then get my helmet on, I will ride her a mile or so before turning the choke off. Now this is in the summer..

In the winter it requires a little more patience, a good 3 to 5 minutes of warm up time when its cold out side. By cold I mean below 40.

Price you pay for owning a Real motorcycle.

in the summer in the mornings I need the choke. In the afternoon in the summer when its above 100F, just a roll or two of the throttle usually works. Winters make me mad, cause she doesn't want to stay started. I envy the FI guys.

yep, need to use the choke in the mornings, but after that if it has sat an hour or so, i will just twist the throttle 2 times to give it a shot of gas before i start, she will fire right up, and may have to use the throttle to keep her running for a few minutes
