Baffled by Dooley Baffles 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Hey Guys,

Need some advice from the Dooley owners out there, having bought a secondhand set I need to figure out how to remove the baffles. Depending on how the ones in place sound I may need to change them. I have removed the muffler tips but cannot see how the baffles are removed, is there any extra bolts to remove. Is there a technique to getting them out.

Thanks
Chris

I too got a used set and was curious about the baffles. So took of the slash tips, and loosened the other screw/bolt under there that supposedly held the baffles in place. I then grabbed 'em with a pair of vise-grips and gave 'em a yank.

Nuttin.....I tried several more times to get them out, but they never budged even a millimeter.

So, I put it all back together and said I'll deal with that if I ever have to. So far I'm happy as a clam with the sound and performance. No need to fix something that isn't broken.

But I can understand and appreciate your question. Maybe someone with more technical talent can answer this one for you.

HI GUYS THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I RESPONDED. HAVE READ MUCH AND LEARNED TONS. I TOO HAVE DOOLEYS ON MY 03 SILVERADO AND LOVE THEM. WHAT IS HOLDING YOU UP IS THE FIBERGLASS PACKING AND A LITTLE RUST. THEY REALLY PACK IT IN. I USED A VICE-GRIP AND TAPPED IT BACK WITH A HAMMER. AFTER I GOT IT OUT I REMOVED SOME OF THE GLASS FOR EASYER REMOVAL. LOVE THE SITE, YOU BROTHERS HAVE MORE GREAT IDEAS THAN ANY TECH BOOK OR MECHANIC. I MAY NOT ALWAYS RESPOND BUT I WILL BE READING.

I pulled mine and modified to open them up. It was tough no doubt and not for the faint of heart. I used vice grips and grabbed the baffle end to twist and gently hammer tap. Once it was out 2" then put pipe wrench around baffle pipe and used a rubber mallet to slowly beat it out. Had to be very patient to A) not damage the baffle end and never-ever "hit" the canister! Once out I cut the tube sections off from the two ends and welded in straight pipe from the local auto store. That of course is straight pipes and while a fun short ride was window breaking loud. I put them in and out about 4 times, each time drilling a few holes in the "new" baffle pipe. Put back about half of the packing near the back to keep them from rattling.

Please be careful if you do this.....they are very hard to remove from the factory set-up and swing hammers and wrenches around the beautiful chrome canisters is risky. I had already made up my mind I might have to buy new mufflers from Roadhouse. Before they had their issues they were going to offer a more aggressive baffle option. Maybe the new ownership has this available now?

Ride safe.

I just got a *new* set of Dooleys (tapered tips)... The tips are welded into place, and each muffler has two screws on the bottom where the baffle is located. Do the old Dooleys not have these screws? It seems to me that if you take out the screws, you should be able to remove the baffles (I like the sound, so I'm not going so try it).

btw... how do I get my pic/image up there on the little picture window on the left??

Mine have two screws on the bottom. Outer one holds tips on, and inner one holds baffles. Baffles are a little hard to get out the first time, but worth the trouble for sound enrichment.
I tried several ways with mine before I ended up getting the sound that I liked.
Everyone will have different likes, and dislikes, so experiment a little before you seal everything up.

I ended up wrapping all the baffle holes with 24 gauge sheet metal. I used three stainless steel hose clamps to hold sheet metal on. I then used RTV sealer to seal all seams on sheet metal. I tried no baffles, and baffles half covered, with and without muffler packing, and just wasn't quite the sound I was after.

I then put all muffler packing back in, and used masking tape to hold it on until installed (which BTW was what mama yama used). The muffler packing gave it that deeper sound I wanted. I tried no packing, and half packing, but seemed to have a somewhat tinny sound.

I really like the sound I ended up with, but does get old on long trips.. It makes hearing stereo a little hard, so I'll justtwist the throttle, and get this big OL grin on my ugly mug!

One more thing. It's all reversable. You can delete it anytime you want, and go back to begining, but I doubt that will happen.
