5 speed vs 6 speed 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Got to thinking today! (yea I know scarry HUH?) Wit my 5 speed at 80 mph I am running around 2500-2800 rpm. I wonder what rpms a six speed would be running at 80 mph. I assume around 2000-2300. I know that some cars have 8 speeds out now guess that will give you better milage and longer engine life. Just something to kick around.

hey Curt, It wouldn't necessarily be a higher ratio in 6th gear..the ratios may be just closer together..don't know what the final ratio is for say a baker 6 speed...

Prolly depends on the gear ratios, right? Moreso the final drive ratio, which I'm having a heck of a time finding.. but looking at the transmission (and transmissions alone) the gear ratio for the 6th gear in the Harleys is .89, which is technically an overdrive, but the fifth gear on our Stars is .75.. Which is a lower gear. Now, as for final drive and rpms vs. speed it depends on your primary drive ratio, but as far as the transmission gear ratios go, our 5th is actually geared for lower rpm than the Harley 6. Oh, math. My head hurts, I'm going to make supper.

You'd end up getting SVS cruising in 6th gear cuz the RPMs are too low.

On the HD forums most of them with 6 speeds are complaining about better gas mileage in 5th than 6th. the 96CI engines run at 3000 rpm at 70. Speeds lower than that and running in 6th lug the motors just like we do in 5th. Lower rpms will not result in better mileage if you get the engine below it operating power band, you are just dumping fuel in that isnt doing anything because you are lugging it. I mentioned in an earlier post that we went from a race engine turninig 7800 rpms to one running 8500 plus and our gas mileage improved. We keep the engine in its designed power range and it performs better. From what I am reading on the other forum, this is the case with the 6 speed trannys also. JMO.

Hey guys I don't know where your getting your information but my 5spd harley at 70mph is turing 2500rpm. The 6 spd has the same gear ratio but the 6th gear is an overdrive.

Got it from 6 or 7 identical post on the HDforums site tonight. It is a big topic of discussion there just like it sometimes is here. I'm not doubting you. Just posting what multiple people have been saying there. They do say that 6th is an overdrive, I consider our 5th to be one also.

Here is a chart of the HD gear ratios

they are also saying the 2009 are geared even lower, but I dont have a chart on that. When they went to the 6 speed they brought the gears closer together. A 5 speed comparted to the 2006 6 speed would be about 300 rpm more at 70 than you are running. So i guess it depends on what year bike you have. the difference is less on the 2007 than the 2006's. go figure.
