My GPS wiring harness goes straight to the battery, and has a 10A in-line fuse. I may take my 12V adapter off. I've never used it for anything. I originally bought it for the GPS to plug into...

Yea so does my Garmin CS60 but some require the step down, especially those that also charge a bettery in the GPS so that you can use it cordless, like the Garmin Janet's got.

I was hoping he did not hook it right into 12V though I thought he was hooking into a cig lighter outlet

Well, my 12V adapter IS a cigarette lighter, so I think it could handle the voltage. I don't know anything about other 12V adapters, though.
