V&H Propipe around 4 bills , BAK or similar around 3 bills , and a 31 tooth front pulley (for more bottom/mid)around 2 bills.

These 3 pieces will Really wake the bike up. Can be installed in one day by someone with mechanical ability , and fits right in his budget. Best of all , no more tail lights. BB

$1000 is all his friend has. Pipes, better air box, and dyna 3000. Will require rejetting. Should bump HP/torque by about 15%. This would be equivalent to a stage 2 speedstar. Should be able to do this around $1000 if you get good prices and willing to do the work his self.

Ever price high compression pistons ($350), hi flow manifold ($140), ported cylinder heads ($1,500), 45mm carb ($500), camshaft & valve springs ($750). These are just parts costs at MSRP and can probably get them for about 25% off.

Total spending over $3K + labor costs (if he doesn't want to do it himself) gives him about 92hp (stock is about 65) and bumps torque from @ 95 foot lbs to 110 foot lbs.

This should handily beat the HD unless its a screaming eagle or vrod, and probably not the VTX either.

Think the VTX1800 is stock around 106HP and 120lbf torque (but the VTX is ugly ). Kawi VN2000 (111HP and 130lbf torque)

If your friend wanted speed, he picked the wrong bike unless he wants to spend more money. Tell him to sell the R* and get a '09 V-Max. Guarantee he'll beat all his buddies @ 197HP/122lbf torque... Of course this isn't very comfy for cruising a long time, but who cares, you'll get to your destination much faster

I did the stage iv, and a thirtyone tooth pull ~3700 dealer installed. I paid 9100 for a new 2007 midnight so I am still way under a harley and it is a rocket for a v-twin. however if you really want speed, don't buy a v-twin. I just like the feel. I does give most of the HD boys something to think about however.

Air kit and proper jetting is all I have and can pull my buddies Harley Roadking (2 into 1 pipes and remap on a dyno). If you're going to go pipes, really pay attention some sound good but can actually decrease your power, I'd suggest a 2 into 1 system. I have stock pipes and feel I've got greater torque (more seat of the pants punch) and less Horse Power (top end pull) than with stage 1 modified stock pipe.

The Roadstar is bigger than most harleys, therefore it should be able to be faster... Displacement is a good thing... but There is no replacement for driving ability, such as shifting at the right time, down shifting when appropriate, using the full RPM range, clutch management... ect... You can spend all the money in the world, and if you short shift it and don't downshift.. these guys will pull you all day long. We have a narrow RPM range compared to most bikes, we almost idle in top gear at 55, Harleys have a much higher RPM range and use that when pulling from say 55 to 70, where we have to downshift.

Keep in mind also, if you're driving a bike with 300 pounds of extra's on it (hard packs, windshield, highway bars, a wife on the back) you'll never be able to keep up with the guy who's got a stripped down 300 pound bike..

I'm with BB. Best bang for the buck IMO.

Maybe port the stock manifold too. That's cheap if you can do it yourself.

It's over the budget but after those mods the next thing he's probably going to want is to bump the rev limiter out of the way with a Dyna box.

From what I read on http://mototuneusa.com/thanx.htm I would not encourage porting the heads. It could result in a loss of power. You may want to consider high velocity porting instead. Check out his site and look for the article on porting and email him for info on the R*.

He does list a number of engines he has done high velocity porting on, but most are sport bikes.

Porting is not a bad thing,, but polishing the ports on v twin is not gonna help as the velocity is not fast enough for the polishing to do any good, infact it hurts, at lower velocity, you need some "fuss" in the ports to help break up the fuel mix...if you want to polish the exhaust..no problem...IMO...

1st post, but a subject a know a little on. I had a HD, old shovelhead. Any engine can benifit from ported and polished heads as well as the intake. This is something with a little guidance you can do yourself! When complete you have to have a good set of pipes, and a good high flow air cleaner! Doing it yourself be prepared to play with changing jets until you find the right mix. I plan on doing the '00 Roadstar I just picked up very soon! My shovel head was raked 38 degrees. NO STROKE or BORE or PISTONS and I couls pull the front tire through 3 gears and off the line I could make the crotch rockets look twice. JMO

I don't know much but my friend's HD Road King has 110 hp and my 07 R* has 71 hp.Needless to say he leaves me in the dust. He can go to 100 mph in a heart beat.Well 40 more hp does something. When I'm not riding with him my R* goes plenty fast for me.Still gets up and going quickly when I need it too.

how much green did he lay out to get that, and what mods? is that a dyno figure or top of the head dealer figure?

smells like some serious work gone on there.
