I think I'm running rich then, but I really don't get a lot of smoke, and I have to warm it up a bit, as the temperature is falling. In the afternoons, I don't need any choke. I went to check my exhaust to see how much carbon was built up inside, and it's filthy. Moderator Posts: 9221 Re:What are the symptoms of running lean? 3 Years, 7 Months ago   You should need the choke every time you start it cold..no matter if its 30 or 90 degrees out...It may start and hit a few licks and then stall if you don't use the choke.. but what you want is for it to start with the choke without touching the throttle...as it warms up, you ease the choke in a bit, you can hear the change it the exhaust as it gets more even...   Logged       The administrator has disabled public write access. #126371 Frank_W (User) Riding The Filthy Sow! No throttle, starts on the first lick, just as you describe. In the afternoon, if the day has been hot, then I usually don't need the choke. Now that temps are down to a more reasonable level (70's and 80's in the afternoon), then I need the choke in the afternoon, too. What I'm thinking, from your post, is that I'm running just a tad rich. Nothing to worry about. Most folks make the mistake of running these bikes on the rich side. I guess it's an hold-over from the days when we all worried about burning holes in the tops of the pistons These bikes will tolerate running quite lean before they run badly enough to ruin the engine. My advice is to run a lean as you can ... it will choke on you before it runs bad enough to cause damage.
