Re:How do mods effect MPG? 3 Years, 7 Months ago
in my current configuration i´ve gained fuel economy!

i ain´t had it dyno´ed, but tried against a stocker it pulls a LOT stronger. i now get around 37-40 mpg (BTW, this is using real gallons ) if i thrash it, and 50+mpg on a run at 80-85mph. overall mixed riding gives me 45+mpg. definate improvement on the stock figures.

2001 1600 roadie

reprofiled manifold
pro hypercharger
dynojet kit (damned if i can remember the jet size and needle setting. got it nailed a couple of years back and left it there but forgot to write it down)
khrome werks slashcuts
1700 roadie ignition module.

the 1700 module was one of the best additions, the programming of the ignition is better than the 1600, rev limiter cuts in just before 5000rpm, and when cruising it feels like the torque curve is right in the sweet spot relative to road speed at 80+ mph. it was a plug-and-play instant pick me up.

cheers steven!

I have been in my carb and put pipes and the air box on and other than twisting the throttle too often to hear her purr... my gas mileage is the same as stock with more power...
if I cruise like a normal person I get high 40's - 46-52 mpg, but my avg drive fast highway of 80 ish..
keeps my mpg around 44 all around with my city stop and go kept to a minimum..
and when it was stock I got no better than that..

Same here... my average has come up a little since pipes, Mr. C. and jetting. I average 44-45 all around but get 50+ on interstate runs.

I wanted to get back with you on My Mod. process. Last time I talked with you, I was telling you about my new straight pipes I put on my 04 1700. I was telling you that I went from Cobra Pipes without baffles and a Hypercharger to straghts. I jeted with cobra's jet kit to their specifications. using the 185 main jet. It sounded like a 747 (LOUD) but much less power.
I took your advice and put in the torque cones for back pressure, and its a little better, but I'm blowing alot of carbon. I read some of the tech articles and checked the PMS. It was at 3 1/4 turns out. So I turned it in one turn. I'm going to clean the plugs and try it. I don't know how anyone can adjust PMS without taking the carb off, but anyway I think it was running rich, and this should lean it out. I'll let you know.
Thanks,
Big Tim

I difficult but doable.

Until you get the hang of it, grab your wife's small cosmetic mirror and place it at the base of the cyliders. If you move it and you head around you should be able to see the PMS hole.

Get a slim, at least 6" long flat head screwdriver and insert it into the hole, then lightly turn it until it seats in the PMS. Mark the handle the screwdriver with a marker (as a reference) and turn away.

Doc,

Is there a brass plug covering the PMS from the factory?

If it still has the plug then you need to remove the carb to remove the plug .... much easier than trying to remove the plug with the carb on the bike.
