Make sure you have a good lock washer on it and torque it to 61 ft-lb

Stoby, I had the same thing happen to my 05R*. With the loud pipes on I didn't hear the noise on decel. When I did the damage was done. It is possible the reason the nut on the pulley came loose again is that you might have excessive wear on the splines on the shaft and the pulley causing a loose fit, (slop). If that is the case you will have to replace the middle driven shaft, and the pulley. There is a gasket and an O'ring also. I try to check mine about every 8,000 miles or so. Bought a couple extra lock washers with the tabs from yamaha and use red lock tite. If you have a shop manual and torque wrench and tools you can do it yourself. The stealer wanted between 600.00 and 700.00 bucks. The parts cost me if I remember about 325.00.

I installed the lock washer that was missing from the factory. It has a tab that bends up to lock it after you've torqued it to spec.
