The dreaded chirp 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Hi guys,

Okay I have the chirp coming from the belt have adjusted and still there today I coated it with belt dressing and no more chirping. I had sprayed it before but not a lot and it did help. So my question with only 11,000 on it is it time for a new belt if so what kind. (I just got this second hand this summer).

Thanks for any advise

Ron

Gidday...Rono....There was a previous thread about this a month or so ago.

I've only got 5,000 klms on my R* but I was experiencing some 'chirp' until I adjusted the belt. I also noticed the plastic lower belt guard was slightly touching the belt....just bent it back out away from the belt and no problems since.

I'm sure others will give you better info mate....but this is my 2c worth.

I have loosened it tightened it and still have the chirp I took the plastic guard off but do not see any rubbing marks on the inside. Today I had it on the lift turning the rear tire slow and could here it clicking and chirping while I had the belt guard off I sprayed the heck out of the belt and did not hear the chirp or click any more.. Thats why I was wondering about the belt or should I just keep spraying the belt with dressing.

Ron...don't know if you've checked this mate. Some time back..Doc advised not to rely on the adjustment marks on the swing arm. I've followed this advice since and now check my adjustment with a tape measure from the rear axle to the swing arm pivot.

I've been told that apart from mechanical damage or abuse, belts should go 100k plus. Maybe spin your belt and check to see if it is damaged.

Sorry I can't offer any better than this mate. I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of this...stand by.

BTW Ron....I personally wouldn't keep applying the spray..the way I see it is that sprays / lubricants tend to collect dust and end up forming grinding paste on moving components - belt and pulleys....AN OPINION ONLY

This is a post from Gram. I have always heard 100K on belts also, but this would indicate maybe not.

"I have had this problem twice with two different R*'s. The belts just harden up to the point where nothing will eliminate the chirp. With both used belt dressing for a while to temporarily get rid of it, but that require reapplying fairly frequently and is a pia.

Both were resolved by replacing the belts. Both times I converted to Dayco Panther belts. No more chirping."

Javawave...I know you posted comments from Gram...but at 11k...unless the belt has been subject to damage or abuse do you think the belt would need replacing at this stage?

I'm curious....

BTW...rono....how old is the bike - what year?

his bike is a 2002. he just got it used. 11k is not very many miles, but you dont know what conditions it has been stored in etc... maybe the elimates have taken a toll on the belt.

Yep, this could be the case.
