4000 Mile Service (5190 Actually) 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Oil Filter-$13.69
4 Qts Oil- $37.96
1 Air Cleaner-$36.60
Owning a 102ci Road*-priceless

I am going to have to start doing this stuff myself, total cost $251.62. Will have to get a service manual, but to much for basically an oil change.

When I asked the service technician what kind of oil they used, I was told the brand (don't remember)but it is basically motor oil. When I asked him to put synthetic in he said that they used semi-synthetic. Anyone know what that means?

I also told him I only wanted 4 quarts, he looked at me like I was crazy. When explained to him SVS he stated that he had never seen a bike in this area with SVS. I only had him put 4 quarts in anyway, so you Road* guru's tell me I did the right thing.

Thanks

$252???

Easy to do all of this. Just need to learn how. Changing oil... the steps are nicely laid out in the tech section. Can do it yourself in about 40 minutes.

You should consider switching to a K&N air filter, even if you don't want to change out your box. Life time filter @ $53 (part #YA-1704). Will save you $$$ in the long run as you only need one.

Semi-synthetic is just what it sounds like partly synthetic oil, part dinosaur oil.

Yep, 4 quarts is right. The only thing you did wrong was to pay that much. What oil filter did they put on. Avoid yami and fram filters. They're junk.

Where can we get that K&N filter at? Is there a good website or can you just pick it up at your local walmart or autozone?

So those of you that do your own service how do you keep records in case you ever need them for warranty? Do you keep the receipts of the oil you purchase etc?

I think the maintenance schedule just calls for "blowing out the filter" at 4000 miles. Shouldn't need one so quick unless it's really dusty and dirty where your at.

do a search for that part number. Most online motorcycle dealers should carry them. I know phatperformanceparts does. I usually clean my k&n filter like every other oil change.

I suppose you could keep written records and keep receipts of what you've done. Might help fetch some extra $$$ if you show a log and receipts.
