I just dont understand how people are prepared to let a stranger work on their bike, 27 years on the road and think my bike went to a shop once because I didnt have the service tool.
It has to be essential to learn about your bike doesnt it?
What will you do if your 200miles from home and break down someday

WOW that is way to expensive for a oil change. Could have done it youself for $35.00 and bought 200 dollars worth of chrome. All you have to do is save all your receipts and keep a maint. log and the warrenty is still good.

The odds of this bike breaking down to the point of actually needing warranty work is slim I would think.
I have no idea about warranties with the R*,
Mine was almost 7 years old when I bought it and other than the recall hasn't been in the shop for anything.
I do all the work in the garage, there really isn't that much to the thing.
For most people, pulling the oil plug and filter, the tank to do the spark plugs, and pulling the rims off to change the tires is all the maintenance your ever going to need.

None of those things are hard or in need of a mechanical degree to do. There are enough threads on this site to basically talk you though tearing your bike down to the frame and putting it back together again. Once you do it the first time, it will be cake from then on.

My 5000 mile service from my dealer this summer was only 170 bucks and that included going to Syn and new spark plugs. Not bad compared to the 298 for my 1000 mile service on the "other" bike that was just adjustments and fluids.

The service tech at the dealer where i purchased my R* recommended not putting in synthetic but the blend. They didn't say they wouldn't do it, but he did mention the clutch might not work as well with the synthetic. Not sure why they were against it. I would have thought it would have been more money in their pocket if they did it.

So with the odds being slim that most of these bikes will not need warranty work, I have another question. Maybe I should start another thread, but since I started this one I don't feel as though I am hijacking it.

I did not buy an extended warranty at the time of purchase, but I have been thinking that maybe I should have, and have been considering buying one even now. So my question is how many people bought extended warranties, and do most of you consider it to be money wasted?

I bought an extended warranty with my bike when I purchased it new in June. So I have a 6-year warranty (the factory 1-year plus 5 extra years for about $22/month more in my payments).

Worth it? I figure in 2013 when I know that I still have another year on my warranty, I'll think the extra 22/mo. will have been worth it.

I bought the extended warranty when I bought my '05 used with 1k on the odometer. I got svs and took it to the dealer before I knew about the clinic. They reamed the valve guides and replaced valve stem seats and some gaskets and it was covered. They said it was about $1500 worth of work. If I had known about the clinic I may have been able to fix it with Curt's cure for svs. Also the dealer didn't give me a hard time about anything and they said yami gave them the ok to do the work under warranty. No problems since then. It was worth it because I had a positive experience. I've read about owners who have had problems getting the dealers to cover the work or not fix it right.

I havent bought the extended on my bikes because I dont typically keep them long enough to use it. But I have on my cars because I run the miles up so fast. It has paid for itself on every car I have purchased. but I put about 50K a year on my cars and trucks. Factory warranty does not last long for me.
