Got a 4-pack at Sears, plus bought the "blue" polish for extra-fine shine...
Buffing Compund Set

Use the "white rouge" for polishing to a chrome look, then the blue one for the final touch.

It is important to have a buffing wheel for each type of compound. You cannot 'clean' the wheel so you're defeating the purpose when using finer compounds.

There are also different type wheels for the different compounds. Generally harder cotton wheels for the coarse and softer wheels for the fine.

Good luck ... it's a time consuming dirty job .... especially the tins.

Wear a mask!

I have used Blue Magic Metal Polish for years starting with my first bike(Sporty) with excellent results!!!!

Wipe it on, Buff it off... Do it twice if you don't like the results the first time... Painless

k, I'm ignorant when it comes to this.

  • Why buy the set of buffing compounds if you only want the white?

  • Where do you get the blue?

  • Is a white compound and blue compound the same regardless of where you get it. Meaning a white from say ACE hardware is the same as white from Sears?

  • How many of these blocks/buffing wheels would you need to do your forks (I imagine they wear out)?

  • Never used a bench grinder, do you only use the edge, or do you use the flat side or both?

  • Which 2 buffing wheels would you use (provide URL please)

  • How long will it take to do the forks?

Sorry for the stupid questions.

  • Buffing is sanding .... would you sand your scratched up table with 400 grit? It would take forever. You use the rouge to get the sanding marks off and the finer white (or green, or grey ..) to get the mirror shine.

  • Is a white compound and blue compound the same regardless of where you get it. Meaning a white from say ACE hardware is the same as white from Sears?

  • Don't know. There are various colours around. I get my stuff from jewelry supply place where I can get consistant products. I've bought some stuff at the local hardware store and found it a crap shoot.

  • How many of these blocks/buffing wheels would you need to do your forks (I imagine they wear out)?

  • I'd recommend two ... one for the rouge and one for the white. See my old post (link provide in another post) for more info.

  • Never used a bench grinder, do you only use the edge, or do you use the flat side or both?

  • Bench grinder will work but depending on where you buy the wheels you may need and adaptor ... it allows you to change wheels by twisting off the wheel.

Ordinary bench grinders are not made for buffing (the bearings are not sealed) so eventually the bearings wear down from the compound dust and cause them to 'sing'.

  • Caswell

Lower forks .... took about 6 hours per fork for me.

For smaller pieces you could use never dull it's a cotton wadding, It takes elbow grease a little less dust and up keep is just metal polish usually clean with lighter fluid normal precautions it's flammable. It will get black on surface just get clean wadding and keep going. I did rims on the tower at work this way and they still look good. It was about 10 years ago.
