How to MAKE chrome!!! (thanks TampaSVT) 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Thanks to the advice from TampaSVT, I just learned how to turn anything that's brushed aluminum into CHROME!!! I bought a $44 bench grinder, put a $5 buffing wheel on it, applied some metal polish (the white clay bar-looking stuff), and polished my once brushed-metal stock risers into CHROME! Take a look at the pictures below... thanks again TampaSVT!

Partially polished...

Fully polished (no, this didn't come off a Midnight Star or Roadstar "S"...)

Do you have to keep doing that though? Is there some kind of coating one can spray on the part to keep that look... or is it easy to maintain?

A wipe of lighter fluid works to maintain, or they make a zilllion products. But once it's done, it's pretty easy to keep it up that way by hand. About any metal polish will do. MC

Don:

Great work. I knew you could do it...

I typically wipe everything down with a good coat of Mother's when I'm done. I did a few pieces in July (all three calipers, etc.) and they still look great. Oxidation really dedends on whether you park in-doors, air quality (salinity), etc.. Most pieces hold up for quite a while.

CAUTION: Wear a dust mask! You don't want Black Lung...

Got the same set up and it works great on Stainless Steel as well just takes a lot more polishing. I even took a piece of brushed stainless and made a tach bracket to fit between my riser clamps. Really adds a lot of bling to the bike all over and the stainless is easy to keep clean.

Haha! Yeah I adjusted the hue of the photo to where the shine of the polished metal showed the best... ended up my brown kitchen table turned green.

What is the "white clay bar looking stuff" and where can it be purchased?
