Hard to start 3 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
As the weather turned colder I was having a hard time starting the bike. I wound up bying starter fluid. Spraid it in the carb and it started.
I have around 10k on the plugs. I figured it might be the plugs are weak so I went to change them. Could not start the bike to run the gas out. So I took the hose off very little came out. I don't think that was normal. Maybe the gas got sucked up in the engine when I wss cranking it trying to get it started.
I changed the plugs and at first it was hard starting but it did start. I think maybe that was because it needed time to get gas to the carb.
I will let it sit and see what happens.
Can anyone give me any input?
Thanks
Ron

were you riding it regularly before it had trouble starting? maybe old fuel filter? or pump...do you have the fuel petcock turned on?

filter was changed 10k petcock is and was on. NOt the pump once it started it would work fine all day even after restarting. I thought it could be weark spark and when it is cold needed more spark. But I really wonder why so little gas came out of the hose when I disconnected it.from the filter. The hose I disconnected was on the right side of the filter box the one that gives gas to the filter.
Like I said maybe it got sucked up in the engine when I tried starting it. I really don't know just guessing
Thanks
Ron

You need to disconnect the hose from fuel filter when removing tank.
When I used starter fluid took a second to catch and then ran fine.

may want to run seafoam or a similar product in it to clear out the carb if it is gummed up a little bit and see if that solves anything, did that on an old honda i had and it turned into a new bike haha

I take the hose off at the petcock when removing the tank, in any case, I can't remember if the filter is before or after the pump on a stock setup, but if it is after the pump, you won't get much out of the line...if it's before the pump, then the tank should drain dry providing the petcock is on... BTW go easy with the starting fluid, it has a tendency to wash the cylinder walls ...

yeah, remove the hose from the petcock and run a short fuel line hose from the petcock to a gas can, turn the petcock on and it will flow unless you have issues with your petcock

Also, have you vented your gas cap. If the tank vent is clogged and you haven't vented, not much gas will come out on the bottom side.
