I take the hose off at the petcock when removing the tank, in any case, I can't remember if the filter is before or after the pump on a stock setup, but if it is after the pump, you won't get much out of the line...if it's before the pump, then the tank should drain dry providing the petcock is on...BTW go easy with the starting fluid, it has a tendency to wash the cylinder walls ...

The filter is before the pump on the stock setup Flash and I take the line loose at the petcock as well ....Coug

update
I changed plugs still won't start. If I spray starter liquid in the carb it will start and after riding it will start all the time. I let it sit and it gets cold it won't start again. It pops a little from the back like it is trying to start.
I forgot once I start it using liquid start I can shut it down almost right after and it will start up when I hit the starter
Can't be the fuel filter or pump because it starts warm any further ideas.

you're really good if you don't loose one drop of gas. I usually lose a couple of teaspoons and have to clean up my floorboards when I remove my tank. The bike runs forever in the off position. Last time I turned it off and was trying to burn off the gas in the line, it ran for over 5 minutes; though eventually did shut off. Too much time when you got riding to do. I know a golf tee helps plug the end.

I just went outside and tried moving the choke in and out when I was cranking the bike it started. It must be something to do with the choke. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I also noticed a black knob that turns, it seems to adjust the chock either by keeping it out or keeping it from staying pulled out what is that knob for?

That's exactly what the knob is for...it needs to be tight enough to hold the choke out..but not too tight..I bet that's the problem..in any case, I think the choke may not be working right..

I just discovered that the bike will start with the choke slightly out and when it does it idles low then I pull the choke out to bring up the idle. I never had to do that before. I just about drained the battery trying to start it. I guess I will wait see if I can start it if not put it on a trickle charger. I am still scratching my head over the choke.

so when you usually start it you don't need any choke?
many people on here including myself have to pull the chock out start it let it run like that then bring it in a little at a time and eventually push it all the way in, i tend to take off with it still slightly out and after about a half a mile or so i push it all the way in

No I usually need the choke all the way out and move it in. Now I have the choke out and when I crank it I move the choke in as I move it in it starts just about at the point where the choke is almost all the way in then I need to pull it out to bring up the rpms.
Battery is dead waiting for a jump now so I can take it for a ride in the freezing night.
LOL am I ticked off

Just got back took a ride to recharge the battery burrrrr cold out there. If anyone has an idea why the choke operation changed from leaving it out and starting, to pulling the choke out before you start and slowly moving it in and then when it starts pulling out to increase rpms. I would much appreciate sharing your thoughts. I hate to bring it to the dealer if I could avoid it.

Many thanks in advance
Ron
