Quiting Smoking!!!! 3 Years, 6 Months ago
OK, anyone here done it and done it for good? I have done it before, but never stuck with it for more than a couple months. I'm on my first day of Cold Turkey, and aproaching 24 hrs. I'm Bitchy,Irritated, Angry, my mind keeps fooling me saying to go have one, you all know what I'm talking about. Just looking for support from those of you who know, I'm going crazy here. It's been a very consistent habit for me!! Thanks!

I quit for 3 years (my personal best) with the help of the patch. It doesn't stop the cravings, but you don't feel like killing someone to take their smokes. But I went back to sucking those sweet tits after 3 years... I'm weak.......

I truly think this is worse than crack!!! Not that I'd know. God It sucks to know you can go to the corner and get your fix! Feel like I'm going nuts. My Personal best was about 4 months. I drink, and one cig later it was all over God I felt great without them, but It's amazing how much your body craves the nicotine when it doesn't have it!!!!!

Re:Quiting Smoking!!!! 3 Years, 6 Months ago
Some quick things:

1. The craves are caused by smoking; not by quitting. You don't crave heroin because you've never been hooked on heroin.

2. A crave is a sign of healing, of addiction leaving the body.

3. The actual craving for nicotine is so slight as to be unnoticeable. A crave is nearly 100% mental, and no crave lasts longer than 5 minutes. If you can distract yourself, if you can hang on for five minutes, you've got it licked.

4. You can white-knuckle your way through it, but the easiest route I ever did was Wellbutrin/Zyban in concert with the patch. It was easy... Maybe TOO easy, if that makes any sense. My problem was that I got cocky and convinced myself that I'd beaten it. And then I wondered what "just one" would taste like. The thing is, there is no such thing as "just one." I don't want "just one." I want all 20-30 of them everyday.

5. Every morning is a new commitment. Look yourself in the eye in the mirror and say, "Today, just for today, smoking is not an option." And each morning, renew that commitment.

6. Get a little time off of these things and then when a crave comes, say to yourself, "Do you REALLY want to start this whole thing up again? The shame, the stench, the destruction of your health, the expense, the filth of ashtrays and ashes dropping at the worst time, etc..."

7. Being a smoker means always having to apologize.

(See? I know all the answers. I'm just really bad at following through!)

Quit cold turkey 25 years ago. It is tough, you will have about 5-7 days of misery. Just have to keep thinking how much better you will feel, and how much money you will save. I ate a lot of carrots, and chewed on a lot of toothpicks. It is well worth the effort if you can make it.

Thanks Frank! I like em all except for #3! I think 5 min is false! Been more like 25 min as of right now, and definitely trying to distract myself. Think I may exercise or something

Well, they are like waves... For me, the worst has always been the third day. The first two, I'm psyched up and ready to whip ass on it. Then I get worn down... Good luck!
